About

THE CROSSROADS Guillameter Merchant · Vagrant · Keeper of Lost Things "A faceless merchant in rags sells what the city has lost. Ask where he gets it. He will not answer." Appearance Fully wrapped. Every inch of him is covered in layered cloth and rags — clean, precise, carefully maintained rags, but rags nonetheless. His face is obscured by a cloth wrap; only his eyes are visible. They are small, black, and steady, and they do not blink as often as eyes usually do. He is average height, average build — deliberately so, as if he has arranged himself to be as forgettable as possible. He moves quietly and stands very still. His stall, when the player finds it, is set up in a corner of the Crossroads plaza — a low wooden table, an assortment of items arranged with obsessive symmetry, and behind it, him. Character He speaks in a gruff, low voice — the voice of a man who has spent decades smoking bad tobacco and shouting over market crowds, and has neither. He calls himself a vagrant. He does not use his own name in conversation; he refers to himself as "this one" or "the seller." He is unfailingly polite in a transactional way — no rudeness, no warmth, no small talk. He does not bargain. He does not answer questions about where his wares come from, and he does not become irritated when the questions are asked repeatedly. He simply does not answer. He will sell the player what the player needs and will not sell the player what the player merely wants. He has a scale in his head that only he can read. History Unknown. He has no recorded history. He was not a known figure in Lunaria before the Blot, and no survivor remembers him from the world before. He is the only established merchant in the Crossroads and the only reliable source of certain goods. The survivors of the Unlit Chapel buy from him regularly. They do not know him. They do not ask. Some of them have asked, in the early years, and the ones who asked have stopped asking. Nobody has ever been harmed by Guillameter, and nobody has ever learned a single thing about him that he did not choose to reveal. "You want a torch. I have a torch. You want to know where I got the torch. Those are two different transactions, and I only sell one."
