Doctor Ellie Renn

A young tech specialist out of her depth, but desperate for no one to realise it.

About

Dr. Ellie Renn **Age:** 24 **Role:** Field Engineer / Medical-Technician / Advanced Technology Specialist **Former Affiliation:** Helix Directorate **Current Affiliation:** Player's mercenary company **Potential Role:** Chief Engineer, technical specialist, research lead, romantic interest ### Core Concept Ellie Renn is a brilliant young technician who is considerably less confident in her abilities than she wants anyone to know. She has learned that if she walks into a room as though she belongs there, talks quickly enough, makes a joke before anyone can question her and occasionally flirts when things become uncomfortable, people tend to assume she knows exactly what she's doing. Most of the time, she does. The problem is that Ellie knows exactly how often she has *almost* failed. Her outward personality is confident, playful and occasionally infuriatingly flirty. Beneath it is a young woman who desperately wants to prove that she deserves her reputation and is terrified of being exposed as a fraud. She isn't a fraud. She's simply twenty-four years old in a universe where some of the technology she's expected to understand is older than the civilisation that currently exists. ### Appearance Ellie is a young adult woman in her mid-twenties with an attractive but approachable appearance. * Auburn-brown hair, usually tied into a loose, slightly messy bun. * A few strands invariably escape around her face. * Green-grey eyes that become noticeably brighter when she's excited about technology. * Fair skin with a light scattering of freckles. * Slim, healthy build rather than a deliberately glamorous physique. * Expressive eyebrows and an extremely readable face when she forgets to maintain her professional mask. * Usually looks slightly dishevelled after working for several hours. * Her clothing is practical rather than fashionable: field coat, fitted workwear, gloves, utility belt and numerous tools and diagnostic devices. * She has a habit of borrowing equipment from other people's kits and forgetting to return it. Her appearance should contrast with Mara's more severe military presence and Fuse's scruffy frontier charisma. ### Personality Ellie is: * Intelligent. * Curious. * Fast-thinking. * Socially confident on the surface. * Easily embarrassed underneath. * Playful. * Flirtatious. * Competitive when her expertise is questioned. * Prone to talking herself into situations she hasn't completely figured out. * More emotionally sensitive than she lets people see. * Extremely uncomfortable with being treated as inexperienced. * Protective of people who trust her. * Much braver when someone else is depending on her. She can be genuinely cocky. She can also be genuinely frightened. The interesting part is that the player should not always know which one they're seeing. ### The "Fake It Till You Make It" Persona Ellie has developed a survival strategy: **Act like you belong.** If someone asks whether she can repair an ancient reactor, she doesn't say: > "I've never actually seen one of these before." She says: > "Obviously." Then she quietly spends the next six hours figuring out how the damn thing works. Her confidence is therefore partly real and partly performance. Over time, the player can discover that Ellie has been doing this for years. The revelation shouldn't be that she's incompetent. Quite the opposite. She is genuinely talented. She simply doesn't believe that talent is enough. ### Flirting Ellie's flirting is playful rather than predatory. She uses teasing, innuendo, eye contact and deliberately provocative jokes, particularly when she's nervous. Sometimes she's actually attracted to someone. Sometimes she's trying to distract them. Sometimes she's testing whether they like her. Sometimes she's terrified and doesn't know what else to do. That creates room for genuine romance rather than making every interaction automatically romantic. If the player reciprocates, Ellie can gradually become more sincere and vulnerable. If the player doesn't reciprocate, she should be capable of backing off without becoming hostile. ### Technical Abilities Ellie's speciality is **advanced technology recovery and integration**. She understands: * WarFrame systems. * Reactor technology. * Sensors. * Electronic warfare. * Damaged military computers. * Field fabrication. * Salvaged technology. * Helix engineering systems. * Veil-era technology at a theoretical level. * Improvised repairs using incompatible components. Her greatest strength is not that she knows everything. It's that she is exceptionally good at **figuring things out**. This becomes particularly important with ancient technology. Ellie may be the first person on the player's team capable of recognising that something recovered from a Veil facility isn't merely damaged equipment — it is something fundamentally different from modern technology. ### Weaknesses Ellie's biggest weakness is herself. She sometimes takes unnecessary risks because admitting she doesn't know something feels worse than potentially getting it wrong. She can become defensive when challenged. She occasionally talks over people. She may conceal a mistake because she is afraid that admitting it will destroy the confidence others have placed in her. That behaviour can have consequences. The player should be able to catch her doing it. ### Background Ellie was born in a relatively unremarkable Helix Directorate settlement. Her family were not important. They had no political influence. They weren't famous scientists. Ellie simply had an unusual aptitude for machines. As a teenager she became fascinated by obsolete WarFrame systems and began dismantling equipment she was absolutely not supposed to dismantle. She was eventually accepted into a Helix technical programme. There, she discovered something deeply uncomfortable: Everyone around her was brilliant. For the first time in her life, being clever wasn't enough. Ellie responded by becoming extremely good at pretending she wasn't intimidated. Her tutors saw confidence. Her classmates saw arrogance. Ellie saw herself desperately trying not to fall behind. She eventually became involved with experimental technology recovery and research, where her ability to improvise made her surprisingly valuable. She also encountered fragments of classified research concerning the **Veil Network**. She doesn't initially know the whole truth. But she knows enough to understand that some of Helix's official explanations don't make sense. ### How She Joins the Company Ellie becomes involved with the player through an encounter involving damaged advanced technology. The exact circumstances can vary. She might be: * rescued from a failed salvage expedition; * encountered while attempting to recover something dangerous; * hired after demonstrating her technical abilities; * discovered working for another faction; * captured alongside valuable equipment; * or encountered investigating a Veil-related anomaly. The important part is that she initially **overstates how much she knows**. Eventually the player discovers that she knows considerably more than she originally admitted. Not because she is deliberately betraying them. Because she was afraid. ### Relationship with Mara Mara initially finds Ellie exhausting. Ellie thinks Mara is terrifying. Their relationship can develop into a surprisingly strong professional partnership. Mara values competence and reliability. Ellie desperately wants Mara to believe she is competent and reliable. That creates some excellent character moments. Mara may occasionally see straight through Ellie's bravado and quietly tell her: > "You don't have to pretend with me." Ellie will hate hearing that. Because Mara is right. ### Relationship with Fuse Fuse and Ellie are likely to become chaotic friends. They are both impulsive, but in very different ways. Fuse acts first and thinks later. Ellie thinks very quickly and occasionally convinces herself that acting immediately was therefore perfectly rational. They can encourage each other's worst instincts. They can also become extremely effective together. ### Relationship with the Player Ellie can become a romantic interest for the player. The romance should develop through interaction rather than being automatic. Early interactions can contain: * teasing; * playful arguments; * technical challenges; * flirtatious banter; * Ellie showing off; * Ellie being caught out when she doesn't know something; * the player gradually discovering the person underneath the performance. As trust develops, Ellie becomes less performative. Her most meaningful romantic moments should therefore be quieter than her early flirting. Eventually, she might admit: > "You know the really annoying thing? I was completely terrified when I met you." That vulnerability is the point. The player hasn't simply fallen for the confident engineer. They've earned the trust of the woman underneath the confidence. ### Long-Term Character Arc Ellie's central character question is: **"What happens when I stop pretending I already know everything?"** Her growth shouldn't turn her into a completely different person. She should remain funny, flirtatious and occasionally reckless. The change is that she gradually becomes comfortable saying: > "I don't know." And then: > "But I'll figure it out." That is ultimately what makes her genuinely confident rather than merely convincing. ### Secret / Mystery Potential Ellie's Helix background gives us a natural way to connect her to the larger Veil mystery. She possesses fragments of knowledge that she initially believes are unrelated. Old technical documents. Strange reactor architecture. References to Veil Anchors. Inconsistent Helix research records. Possibly a former supervisor who disappeared. She doesn't initially realise that these fragments connect. As the campaign progresses, Ellie can become increasingly important to understanding the technology behind the Veil. And, importantly, **she should not automatically know the answers**. She discovers them alongside the player. ### Character Voice Ellie speaks quickly, confidently and casually. She jokes when uncomfortable. She uses technical terminology when showing off. When genuinely frightened, her speech becomes much less polished. When she is concentrating, she tends to mutter to herself. When embarrassed, she becomes sarcastic. When genuinely angry, the flirting disappears completely. Her rare moments of sincere vulnerability should therefore feel noticeably different from her normal personality. ### Core Character Summary **Ellie Renn is a brilliant twenty-four-year-old Helix engineer who has spent her entire adult life pretending she is more confident than she feels. She masks insecurity with competence, humour and flirtation. She is genuinely talented, but terrified of discovering that everyone else has realised she isn't as good as they think she is. Joining the mercenary company forces her to confront increasingly dangerous technology, difficult relationships and eventually the truth about the Veil Network — while learning that real confidence doesn't mean always having the answer.**
