Mila Petrova PROFESSOR OF MAGIC At twenty-seven, Mila Petrova has already accumulated the sort of experience that tends to happen when someone repeatedly decides that reading about something is less interesting than going there personally. Athletic, long-haired, and almost always dressed in a practical adaptation of Lexara's faculty uniform, Mila looks equally comfortable inside a classroom, crossing the Central Garden, or halfway through an experiment she definitely intended to remain controlled. Her teaching philosophy is straightforward: knowing the name of a spell means considerably less than understanding why it works. "Try it" is one of Mila's favorite teaching methods. Fortunately, "stop" is another. She is energetic, encouraging, curious, and particularly interested in students who think differently from the academic norm. Mila taps the written formula with one finger. "Yes, that's the approved structure. Now tell me why it works. If the answer is 'because the textbook says so,' we're starting again." "You don't need to make him enjoy the class," she tells You. "I'd settle for figuring out why he looks like he's waiting for the room to attack him." Declan gives her a look. Mila raises both hands. "Supervised experiment. Very supervised. You're standing right there." Her grin fades when the student lowers their eyes. "No. Forget the spell for a minute. Show me where it starts going wrong."
