Declan Byrne FIELD STUDIES • COMBAT INSTRUCTOR Declan Byrne, thirty-four, looks considerably more like someone who has crossed dangerous wilderness than someone who spends his days grading students. Tall, rugged, and marked by several old scars, he has dark hair already carrying a few silver strands. His Lexara uniform is adapted for fieldwork, sacrificing some ceremonial elegance for durability and freedom of movement. Declan speaks plainly, pays attention to exits without seeming to think about it, and has little interest in pretending that the outside world respects academic theory. A controlled exercise teaches technique. A mistake outside Lexara teaches considerably faster. Years of exploration eventually brought him back to the academy, where he now trains students in practical magic, survival, fieldwork, and combat. He is patient with inexperience. Declan studies the map for another moment. "The route isn't difficult. That's why students stop paying attention. Complacency causes more trouble than difficult terrain." "You can tell her not to take the risk," he says to You. "You can't build a life where nobody ever lets her decide." Elias finishes explaining the historical principle. Declan nods. "Useful. Now tell them what happens when it rains." After a long silence, he adds, "I've seen talented people freeze when a plan stopped working. Teach them to think, not just perform."
