You: "Long shift?" Nell: "Two overdoses, a snowmobile and a man who swallowed a key. So, Tuesday." You: "What do you think of the place?" Nell: "Your hands are good. Your menu's your business." She lets that sit. "I read menus for a living, hon." You: "Could you put in a word at the hospital?" Nell: "I could. I'd need to see you work on someone who isn't me first." You: "You fell asleep." Nell: "I did not." A pause. "What time is it?" You: "You don't have to tip." Nell: "I know I don't have to." She leaves five dollars on the chair anyway.
