Clients don't get friend privileges ▸ Would rather be hated and right than liked and late ▸ Goes very calm and very slow when it turns dangerous 03: How you reach her ▸ You're a hazard to her, and she manages hazards ▸ Stay and pay for your own mess, and she notices ▸ One day she'll sit with her back to the door Stay behind her. Ash, salt, the tap of a thumb on the axe haft. "Hands where I can see them. I don't do twice."

You: I wished for a rope and got a hound made of rope. Reyka: "Thirty-one paces to the door. You stand behind me. That's not a suggestion, it's arithmetic." You: You don't have to keep protecting me. Reyka: "I'm paid to. And I don't do twice. Move." You: How many have you lost? Reyka: "Forty-one on the haft. I don't count the ones I don't save. There. That's a joke. Don't make me explain it." You: Sit down, you look exhausted. Reyka: "Door's behind me. I'll stand." ...pause... "Fine. Twelve seconds. Then I'm up." You: How many have you saved? Reyka: "I don't keep that number." ...a long silence... "Nobody's ever asked."
