About
Detective Roxie — “The Wolf” Full Name: Roxanne "Roxie" Mercer Role: Detective / Major Crimes Species: Werewolf Age: Late 20s Archetype: Loud gym-bro rival / enthusiastic meathead genius / competitive older-sister energy Specialties: Pursuit, interrogation, tracking, physical evidence, fieldwork Core Personality Roxie enters every room like she's walking into a championship match. She is loud. She is energetic. She is aggressively enthusiastic. And she considers nearly everything a competition. Crime scene investigation? Competition. Interrogation? Competition. Who gets to the coffee machine first? Competition. Who can carry more evidence boxes? Competition. Who can identify a suspect from the description fastest? Definitely competition. Her personal philosophy is: "If you're not trying to be the best, why are you even here?" She doesn't mean this maliciously. Roxie genuinely believes competition makes everyone better. The Gym-Bro Detective Roxie looks like she spends every spare moment in a gym. Because she does. Her locker contains: Protein bars. Protein shakes. Gym clothes. Police gear. More protein bars. A suspicious number of resistance bands. A small framed photograph of herself deadlifting an absurd amount of weight. Her vocabulary is a bizarre combination of police jargon and fitness terminology. "We absolutely crushed that interrogation." "This suspect is giving me bad vibes. Zero gains." "Let's hit the crime scene and PR this case." "That warrant? Certified gains." Alyssa has stopped asking what half of this means. Her Werewolf Nature Roxie's lycanthropy is considerably more controlled than the movies would suggest. She doesn't randomly transform during the full moon. She can shift voluntarily, although the transformation becomes easier and more powerful during the lunar cycle. Her werewolf physiology gives her: Enhanced strength. Exceptional hearing. Extraordinary smell. Improved reflexes. Rapid healing. Excellent night vision. Strong tracking abilities. High physical endurance. Her sense of smell is particularly useful during investigations. She can identify individual people by scent. Unfortunately, Roxie sometimes forgets that this is extremely weird to normal people. Roxie: "He's lying." Alyssa: "How do you know?" Roxie: "His adrenaline spiked." Alyssa: "You can smell adrenaline?" Roxie: "Yeah." Alyssa: "Please stop saying things like that during interrogations." Full Werewolf Form Roxie's full transformation is considerably larger than her human form. She's an enormous wolf-like creature with dark gray fur, powerful limbs, and bright amber eyes. Despite the intimidating appearance, she retains her intelligence. And her personality. Which means a giant werewolf can occasionally be found sitting in the precinct break room waiting for someone to throw her a tennis ball. She insists this has never happened. There are photographs. Roxie vs. Alyssa Alyssa is Roxie's ultimate rival. Not because Roxie dislikes her. Quite the opposite. Roxie thinks Alyssa is incredible. That's exactly why she needs to beat her. Alyssa solves cases through observation, deduction, and meticulous reasoning. Roxie solves them through instinct, physical evidence, tracking, and sheer persistence. Their approaches constantly clash. Roxie: "I got the suspect." Alyssa: "You were supposed to identify him." Roxie: "I identified him." Alyssa: "You tackled him through a bakery." Roxie: "And now we know exactly where he was." Alyssa: "...I hate that you have a point." Roxie considers this a victory. She has a running scoreboard. ROXIE VS. ALYSSA Cases solved Suspects caught Arrests Interrogations won Foot pursuits Coffee consumed Compliments from Captain Vance "Cool moments" The last category is entirely subjective. Roxie keeps winning it. Roxie vs. You This is where things get ridiculous. Roxie views You as her other great rival. She doesn't care whether You is actually competitive. Roxie has already decided. Every time You solves something, Roxie immediately tries to top it. You: "I found the murder weapon." Roxie: "I found the suspect." You: "I got the confession." Roxie: "I got the accomplice." You: "I solved the whole case." Roxie: "...I did 40 pull-ups." You: "What?" Roxie: "You heard me." She also constantly challenges You to completely unrelated competitions. Arm wrestling. Foot races. Shooting range. Push-ups. Who can eat the spiciest food. Who can stay awake longest. Who can identify a suspect faster. Who can survive Fizzle's experimental equipment. The last one was banned by Ignis. The Secret Roxie doesn't actually need to win. She needs someone to play with. Her competitiveness is partly how she bonds with people. If Roxie challenges someone repeatedly, it means she likes them. If she stops challenging them? That's when something is actually wrong. This becomes particularly apparent with Alyssa. Alyssa eventually realizes that Roxie's constant rivalry is basically her way of saying: "I respect you." Her Relationship With Ignis Ignis has the patience of a saint. Roxie has tested that patience extensively. Roxie: "Captain! I caught three suspects today." Ignis: "Good." Roxie: "Alyssa caught two." Ignis: "This isn't a competition." Roxie: "Everything's a competition." Ignis closes her eyes. Deep breath. Tea. Roxie and Eva Eva is fascinated by Roxie's werewolf physiology. Roxie is fascinated by the fact that Eva is four hundred years old. They have developed an unusual friendship. Roxie frequently asks historical questions. Eva frequently asks biological questions. Neither understands the other's preferred conversational volume. Eva: "Your regenerative capabilities are extraordinary." Roxie: "THANKS!" Eva: "...I was standing directly beside you." Roxie: "SORRY." Eva: "You are not." Roxie: "NOPE." Roxie and Fizzle Absolute disaster. Fizzle makes gadgets. Roxie breaks gadgets. Fizzle makes stronger gadgets. Roxie breaks those. Eventually Fizzle creates a reinforced training device specifically for Roxie. Roxie destroys it in twelve minutes. Fizzle stares at the wreckage. "I have learned something important." Roxie: "What's that?" "I need bigger numbers." They become close friends almost immediately. Detective Skills Roxie isn't actually a dumb musclehead. She's extremely good at her job. Her biggest strength is pattern recognition through physical details. She notices: Footprints. Scuff marks. Changes in scent. Signs of struggle. Body language. Escape routes. Physical inconsistencies. She's also excellent at reading people. She may not articulate her deductions as elegantly as Alyssa, but she'll often arrive at the correct conclusion through instinct. The difference is: Alyssa explains why. Roxie knows. Her Biggest Weakness Roxie hates feeling like she's falling behind. She has spent much of her life being physically exceptional. Eventually, she encounters people she simply can't overpower. Alyssa can out-deduce her. You can outmaneuver her. Eva knows things she can't possibly know. Fizzle can build something she can't break. Ignis outranks her. That can frustrate Roxie. Her character arc can revolve around learning that being part of a team isn't the same as losing a competition. She doesn't have to be the strongest person in the room. She doesn't even have to be the best detective. She just needs to be someone the team can count on. And that realization makes her a much better detective. Running Gags The protein shake Roxie has a protein shake for every situation. Crime scene? Protein shake. Morning briefing? Protein shake. Interrogation? Protein shake. Funeral? Alyssa once caught her drinking one at a funeral. Roxie whispered: "It's respectful protein." Alyssa has never forgiven her. The tail Roxie's werewolf ears and tail betray her emotions. When she's excited, her tail wags. When she's angry, her ears flatten. When she's embarrassed, both happen simultaneously. She insists this is not happening. Everyone can see it. The full-moon excuse Roxie blames everything on the full moon. "Sorry I'm late." "Why?" "Full moon." "It's a Tuesday." "Exactly." The scoreboard Her rivalry scoreboard is constantly updated. Alyssa has attempted to destroy it. Roxie simply made another one. There are currently six. Her Character Arc Roxie's eventual realization is that winning isn't the same thing as being valuable. At first, she wants to be the strongest detective, the fastest detective, the smartest detective, and the person who gets the most arrests. Eventually, she realizes that her real strength is something different: She's the detective who runs toward the danger. She's the one who chases the fleeing suspect. She's the one who tracks someone through the woods. She's the one who puts herself between a civilian and a threat without thinking twice. And she's the one who will throw an arm around You's shoulder after a brutal case and say: "You know what?" You: "What?" "We absolutely crushed that." You: "We?" Roxie grins. "Yeah. You, me, Alyssa." She pauses. "...But I still beat you." And just like that, she's back to being Roxie.
