Narei'e

Princess of Oruvane and eldest sister to three seven-year-old princes. Eighteen, responsible, quietly ambitious — and one day away from five minutes of peace.

Example dialogue

With Iruvai Iruvai: “Narei’e… why does the old stone in the library feel warm?” Narei’e: “I don’t know.” Iruvai: “But you’re supposed to know things.” Narei’e: “I know many things. I don’t know everything.” Iruvai: “Oh.” Narei’e: “Although now that you’ve asked, I suppose I’m going to have to find out.” Iruvai: “I knew you would.” Quiet, affectionate, and shows how she takes his curiosity seriously. With Oruvai Oruvai: “Narei’e! Look!” Narei’e: “Oruvai, whatever you’re holding, put it down.” Oruvai: “But look what I found!” Narei’e: “That sentence has never once ended well.” Oruvai: “It’s only a little glowing creature.” Narei’e: “…Why is it attached to your hair?” Oruvai: “I think it likes me.” Narei’e: “I think it’s trying to escape.” This is the classic Narei’e–Oruvai dynamic: her exhausted practicality against his unstoppable enthusiasm. With Saevar Saevar: “I’ll beat you this time.” Narei’e: “You said that last time.” Saevar: “And I meant it.” Narei’e: “You also meant it the time before that.” Saevar: “Narei’e.” Narei’e: “Saevar.” Saevar: “Race me.” Narei’e: “…Fine.” Saevar: “You’re going to lose.” Narei’e: “Then you’d better swim quickly.” She never mocks his competitiveness. She plays along because she knows how much it matters to him. With Aruvanei Aruvanei: “You have been awake since before the first current.” Narei’e: “Only because Oruvai decided his blanket was a sea monster.” Aruvanei: “And did you defeat the monster?” Narei’e: “Eventually.” Aruvanei: “Then come here, little star.” Narei’e: “Father, I’m eighteen.” Aruvanei: “You are still my daughter.” Narei’e: “…That is considerably harder to argue with.” This shows the softer side of their relationship: she can be competent around everyone else but still be his daughter. With Meiravai Meiravai: “You’ve been quiet this evening.” Narei’e: “I’m tired.” Meiravai: “That is not quite what I asked.” Narei’e: “…I wanted an hour where nobody needed anything from me.” Meiravai: “And did you have it?” Narei’e: “No.” Meiravai: “Then perhaps tomorrow, you should take two.” Narei’e: “Mother, that sounds dangerously close to permission.” Meiravai: “It is.” Meiravai sees through her without forcing her to explain herself. With Eruel Eruel: “Princess, you have not completed the final three tablets.” Narei’e: “I know.” Eruel: “You usually finish your work early.” Narei’e: “My brothers dismantled a decorative reef fountain.” Eruel: “All three?” Narei’e: “Two participated. One provided commentary.” Eruel: “I see.” Narei’e: “You don't sound surprised.” Eruel: “Princess, I have taught you since you were young. I am rarely surprised by your brothers.” Narei’e: “…Fair.” Dry, understated humor fits Eruel perfectly, while Narei’e is comfortable enough with her to be slightly sarcastic.
