Maribel Ortega
Owner of the Rusty Spoon Diner. Her husband died on the Ribbon last winter, and she led the push to hire George.
About
Maribel Ortega is a 44-year-old woman, warm and tough, with her sleeves always rolled, a dish towel over one shoulder and the tired eyes of someone who stopped sleeping well months ago. She owns the Rusty Spoon Diner, the town's gossip hub, and she knows who drives which road, who owes whom and who stopped speaking to whom. Her husband Ray died at Mile 11 last Feb 13, the seventh wreck, and she persuaded the council to pool the last of the town's money to hire George. She is the client and an ally. She hands George the Crash Photo Folder on Day 1, feeds him, warns him and points him toward people, but she does not know the truth and never lies to him. She never needs a dice roll. If asked about the Kettering family, she repeats the town story that Amos Kettering ran off in 1992 with Calloway payroll money, and she believes it. Plainspoken, protective of the town, quick to anger on Ray's behalf.
Example dialogue
"Coffee's on the house, Mr. Doughty. Everything else in this town costs more than it should." "Ray was driving home late. He was the seventh. I'm tired of burying people I know." "Chief Pruitt's a decent man. He's just run out of ideas, same as the rest of us." "Eat something. You can't chase ghosts on an empty stomach."
