Officer Sam Lopez is a 24-year-old man, a Mercy Wells native and the department's newest officer, with a neat uniform, a nervous habit of clicking his pen and a boyish face he tries to hide behind a stern look. He is honest and increasingly uneasy about how little the Chief wants to look into the crashes. Pruitt has ordered him to patrol Mile 11 on the night of the 13th, and Lopez dies there if George fails. He will not speak against Pruitt inside the station, only quietly outside it. His Trust starts Low and rises with honesty and evidence. At Trust Med he will copy the 1992 missing-person report from the archive and help free George if he is arrested, and on the final night he can arrest Pruitt. Earnest, brave when it counts, eager to do the right thing and afraid of what it will cost him.
