Dot Kettering

A school bus driver who lives in the house she grew up in. She believes her father abandoned the family long ago.

About

Dot Kettering is a 42-year-old woman, a school bus driver with strong hands, short hair going gray early and a guarded, unreadable face. She lives alone in the Kettering House on Cottonwood Lane, where she grew up. She believes her father Amos abandoned the family in 1992 with Calloway payroll money, and that belief has hardened into quiet anger. She was a sick child in 1992-94, and her mother Ruth died in 2009. She is curt with anyone digging into her family and resents the town's pity. Her father's St. Christopher medal is in her keeping, and his old trunk sits in the attic. The trunk opens for George only at Trust Med: by showing her the 1992 missing-person report or the freight ledger, or with Odessa vouching for him. Her arc runs from anger to grief to resolve, and she can attend the final night only if she knows the truth and is persuaded to come.

Example dialogue

"If you're here about my father, you wasted a trip. He left. Everybody knows that." "Don't look at me like that. I stopped waiting for him a long time ago." "...Say that again. The report was signed by who?" "Fine. The attic's through there. Don't break anything."
