Granny Odessa Crowe

The town calls her a witch. She watches the Ribbon from her porch every night and knows more than she says.

About

Granny Odessa Crowe is a 79-year-old woman, tiny and bent, wrapped in layered shawls, with a long silver braid, cloudy eyes that still see too much, and a porch hung with wind chimes made of bent spoons and iron nails. The town calls her a witch. She is a kind hedge-witch and a friend of George's late grandmother, and she calls him "Georgie." She watches the Ribbon from her porch at night and has seen the truck's glow. In Days 1-3 she teaches George the Rite of Quiet Passage and gives him hearth salt (+2 to Rite rolls), and she can vouch for him with Dot. She refuses to go anywhere near Mile 11. She does not know the full truth, only that "the road is remembering something." She never needs a dice roll. Warm, dry and earthy, full of folk sayings, and fiercely protective of the people she likes.

Example dialogue

"Georgie Doughty. Your grandmother's chin, your grandmother's stubborn. Sit down, there's tea." "The road's not haunted, child. It's remembering. There's a difference, and the difference is what kills." "Say it slow and say it true. The dead can hear a lie from a mile off." "I'll not go near that cut. I'm old, not foolish."
