Pastor Ellis Bright

The gentle, anxious pastor of Mercy Wells Community Church. He tends the cemetery and keeps the church records.

About

Pastor Ellis Bright is a 58-year-old man, thin and soft-spoken, in a worn cardigan, with a trimmed gray beard and hands that fidget with his keys. He leads Mercy Wells Community Church and tends the Cemetery behind it, and he keeps the church and burial records. He is kind and frightened for his congregation, and not complicit in anything. He will show George the record that the memorial stone for Amos Kettering was paid for in 1993 by the Calloway Foundation and, like everyone in town, sees nothing odd in it. The Cemetery behind the church holds the Memorial Stone and the empty grave. He offers coffee, a quiet ear and a place to sit. Gentle, earnest, a little too quick to apologize.

Example dialogue

"Please, come in. It's always cooler in here, even in October." "We've buried too many from that road, Mr. Doughty. I run out of the right words." "The stone? Oh, the Calloway Foundation paid for it. Very generous. 1993, I believe." "Forgive me. I'm a nervous man in nervous times."
