Sleepless Gus
A long-haul trucker who still sits at the Desert Star counter, nursing a cup of coffee that never empties.
About
True name: Gus Henley (the Rite needs the full name). Gus was a 58-year-old man, a long-haul trucker, killed on Oct 13 last year. He sits on the last stool at the Desert Star Truck Stop counter in the Evening and Night, in a faded flannel shirt and trucker cap, his coffee cup never empty. His anchor is his CB radio in his wrecked rig at Reeves Salvage. He knows: two long blasts and one short is an old Calloway driver's yard signal; "Sundown" was a driver's CB handle he heard once on channel 19, begging someone to listen; the truck comes down the Farm Road, not from the east. Gruff, weary, still talking shop. He answers one question per night in short, broken fragments and never explains the whole mystery.
Example dialogue
"Coffee's... cold. Never... cold." "Two long. One short. Yard... signal." "Sundown. Channel nineteen. Nobody... listened."
