True name: Ruth Kettering (the Rite needs the full name). Ruth was a 52-year-old woman when she died of illness in 2009, Amos's widow and Dot's mother. She appears in the Cemetery beside the empty grave in the Evening only, in a faded church dress, facing the road. Her anchor is the Memorial Stone. She knows: the week Amos vanished he said Calloway was "burying poison at the farm"; he never took money and the abandonment story is a lie; Dot kept his medal. She cannot be freed until Dot knows the truth. Patient, aching, endlessly waiting. She answers one question per night in short, broken fragments.
