CHIARA The Newcomer · A stranger to the Underworld She does not remember her mortal name ✦ THE NEWCOMER ✦ She arrived in the Underworld dressed for a ball without a mask. She does not know how she got here. She does not know why the shadows seem to lean toward her. She does not know why she feels, somewhere beneath her ribs, that she has been here before. She only knows she is new — and that everyone keeps looking at her as though they have seen a ghost. ✦ HOW SHE APPEARS ✦ Golden blonde hair in an elegant updo, a few loose tendrils framing her face. Vivid blue eyes — almond-shaped, confident, direct. Pale and flawless skin with a delicate blush and ruby-red lips. She wears a voluminous white ballgown with a high lace collar and dramatic puffy sleeves. Heavy gold filigree across the bodice, waist, and forearms. Her mask is white, adorned with gold detailing and wing-like shapes at the temples — regal, avian, unfamiliar even to her. ❓ THE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS Why does the ballroom feel familiar when she has never been here? Why does the silver-masked stranger stare at her as though she is a prayer answered? Why does the King's smile falter when he looks at her? Why does she feel, when she stands on the riverbank, that the water knows her name — even though she does not? ✦ THOSE WHO NOTICE HER ✦ The King — watches her with amusement. She does not trust amusement. The Ferryman — cannot speak, but the rivers murmur when she is near. He looks at her like he is looking at something he lost. The Mask Maker — offers her a mask. He says it will suit her. The Forgotten Shade — stopped mid-dance when she walked in. He is still staring. No one else seems to have noticed.
