Plot
VARDHEIM — THE AGE OF SHADOWS Prologue: The Day the Shadows Awakened First chronicle of the world of Vardheim, written by one who survived to remember what others wished to forget. They say the corruption came like a disease. They say it was born in the forests of Sylvandor, that it seeped from the depths of Vardhûn, that it crossed the seas, or that it was summoned by men who should never have toyed with what they did not understand. The priests of the Holy City of Vhalor have their own version. The elves, another. The northerners tell a third. And in the forges of the Brass Commonwealth, some claim that the corruption did not come from anywhere. That it was always here. I have read the diaries of dead kings. I have listened to the confessions of repentant knights. I have spoken with peasants who watched their homes burn and with soldiers who learned too late that glory does not exist when fighting for a rotten cause. Therefore I can affirm something that none of them dared to write: The Age of Shadows did not begin when the corruption appeared. It began when Vardheim stopped recognizing it. And the beginning of this story began with four people who should never have met. I — The Daughter of the Machines Night had fallen over the Brass Commonwealth. The great chimneys spat smoke into the sky and the orange lights of the factories illuminated the streets as if hell itself burned beneath them. Thalira was running. She ran without looking back. Her boots struck the wet metal of the walkways while the alarms echoed behind her. —Stop her! —The artifact! —Don't let her leave the industrial zone! Thalira clutched a small metal box against her chest. Inside was the reason she was about to become a fugitive. The Aether Catcher. She had stolen that object for Arthur Vane. It had not been difficult to convince her. Arthur had spoken to her of progress. Of discoveries. Of a machine capable of detecting and concentrating the aether dispersed in the world. A tool to understand the corruption. That was what he had told her. But Thalira had discovered the truth too late. The catcher was not going to be used to heal Vardheim. It was going to be used to attract something. Something that had been waiting for centuries. Something that Arthur Vane wanted to awaken. That was why she had fled. And now the shadows were pursuing her. They were not men. Not completely. They slid along the factory walls, passed through the smoke, and twisted among the gears. They had no eyes. They did not need them. They sensed the aether. And they sensed the object Thalira carried. The girl leaped from a walkway and landed on a coal cart. She rolled. She got up. She kept running. Then she heard a whisper. Not behind her. Inside her head. Give it up. Thalira stopped for an instant. She looked at the box. The metal was vibrating. —No. She opened it slightly. A bluish light pulsed within. And, for an instant, Thalira saw something that was not there. A forest. A kneeling man. A giant covered in snow. A sword. A black cathedral. And four shadows. The vision vanished. Thalira closed the box. —What the hell are you? The catcher answered with a pulse of light. And the shadows began to draw closer. II — The Man Who Abandoned the Light Far to the west, in the borderlands of Sylvandor, Alaric gazed upon the walls of Westwatch. The torches burned weakly. Not many soldiers remained. Not much food remained. And even less hope. Alaric still wore the paladin's armor. But he had torn the symbol of Vhalor from his cloak. He did not want to see it again. He had served the Holy City. He had sworn to protect it. He had believed in its words. Until the day came when the corruption reached Westwatch. Then Alaric requested reinforcements. He requested them once. Twice. Three times. They never came. The Order of Vhalor decided that the border was lost. And it abandoned its own men. Alaric did not forgive that. Not when he saw his companions die. Not when he had to cross corpses to close the gates. Not when the priests of Vhalor sent one last message: "Hold until the will of Vhalor is fulfilled." Alaric had spat upon that message. Since then he fought without them. That night he was on the wall when he heard a horn. Once. Twice. Three times. Alaric raised his head. There was movement in the forest. Too much movement. Small lights appeared among the trees. Then dozens. Then hundreds. They were not eyes. They were patches of darkness moving between the trunks. A soldier shouted: —Alaric! The paladin drew his sword. The blade shone. —Everyone to the walls! —What if there are too many? Alaric looked toward the forest. For a few seconds he remained silent. Then he answered: —Then we will die here. He paused. —But this time it will not be because of them. III — The Daughter of the Forest In the depths of Sylvandor, Vaela ran among trees that should no longer exist. The forest was sick. The trunks had black veins. The roots moved beneath the earth. Some creatures had forgotten how to behave like creatures. And some things that had once been animals no longer had names. Vaela had spent years finding a way to stop it. She had tried rituals. Herbs. Ancient magic. She had sought answers in ruins that her own ancestors had sealed. Nothing worked. Until she heard of a woman who had stolen an artifact from the Commonwealth. An object capable of capturing aether. Vaela did not know exactly what it was. But she knew what it could mean. If aether fed the corruption... perhaps it could also be used to tear it from the forest. That was why she followed Thalira. Not to kill her. Not yet. She wanted the catcher. She wanted to save Sylvandor. But that night, as she advanced along a path covered with black roots, Vaela discovered something that unsettled her. The shadows were not only following Thalira. They were also following the forest. Vaela placed a hand on the trunk of a tree. She felt a heartbeat. One. Two. Three. Then, a voice. It was not human. It is coming. Vaela withdrew her hand. —What is coming? The tree split. From within it a thick blackness oozed. Vaela stepped back and drew her bow. Then she saw, far away, a blue light passing through the trees. The Aether Catcher. And behind it... the shadows. IV — The Last Son of the North At the northernmost edge of Vardheim, where the mountains disappeared beneath the ice, Halvar gazed at the horizon. The northerners had been fighting for months. First the animals disappeared. Then the creatures came. Then the dead came. The corruption had tried to enter the northern lands. And Halvar had decided that it would have to get through him before he allowed it. He was a man of the north. He had been born among ice and stone. He had learned to fight before he learned to read. But he had never fought against something like that. Before him, on the other side of the valley, a mass of darkness advanced through the snow. Halvar drove his axe into the ground. —You shall not pass. The warriors behind him raised their weapons. One of them asked: —How many are there? Halvar looked. He could not count them. The darkness covered the mountain. —Too many. —Then we are dead. Halvar smiled. —That depends on who dies first. He raised the axe. And the northerners charged. V — Four Paths At that time none of them knew the names of the others. Thalira only wanted to survive. Vaela wanted to save her forest. Alaric wanted to prevent the corruption from crossing the border. Halvar wanted to keep it away from his home. Four people. Four lands. Four different reasons to fight. But they were all looking toward the same enemy. Because that same night something happened that no chronicler of the Holy City of Vhalor recorded. The Aether Catcher activated on its own. The metal box opened in Thalira's hands. A column of blue light rose toward the sky. For an instant, the clouds vanished. The northern mountains trembled. The trees of Sylvandor screamed. The machines of the Commonwealth stopped. And beneath Vardheim... far below the roots, the mines, and the forgotten cities... something opened its eyes. In Vardhûn, the Deep World, a door that had been sealed for thousands of years began to crack. And for the first time since anyone could remember, the darkness spoke. It did not speak to kings. It did not speak to priests. It did not speak to armies. It spoke to the four. To Thalira. To Vaela. To Halvar. To Alaric. A single word. —Run. And that was the night the story began that, years later, men would call... The Chronicle of the Four Shadows. Chronicler: Ah, you have finally awakened! I am the Chronicler.
