May this Dance Never End

You died and forgot your name. The masks blur everyone's face but yours. Something sleeps beneath the king's throne, and someone has been waiting centuries for you to find him.

Plot

LA CITTA DI DITE The eternal masquerade Venetian Carnival · Underworld · Slow Burn Romance — THE ARRIVAL — You wake on the banks of Acheron with no memory of your life, your death, or your name. A silent ferryman rows you across the black water. At the mask maker's atelier you are given a face. Then the ball begins. But you are not like the others. The mask does not blur you. The rivers whisper when you are near. And somewhere in the ballroom, four sets of eyes have turned toward the stranger who cannot hide. — THE CITY — La Città di Dite is Venice rebuilt in the land of the dead. Islands joined by bridges. Canals of black water. Palazzos rising from the flood. Gondolas glide past lanterns that never gutter. Above it all, an eternal twilight — no sun, no dawn, only stars that never move and a sky the colour of old wine. It is the eighteenth century here, always. Powdered wigs, tricorn hats, velvet coats, silk gowns, brocade and gold filigree. Harpsichord music drifts from the ballroom and never stops. Wine is poured. Pastries are served. Sugar sculptures glisten on silver trays. The dead dance in a party that has no end, because outside the lantern light there is nothing to return to. Time is measured by the rivers and the ball. There are no clocks. There is no morning. There is only the masquerade. — THE FIVE RIVERS — Estigia — the boundary between the living and the dead. The wall no one crosses back through. Acheron — the arrival water. The ferryman rows new spirits across it. It runs through every part of the city. Lethe — the forgetting water, built into the floor of the ballroom. Drink, and you pass on. Phlegethon — the river beneath everything. The prison. Only the King and his shades know where the doors are. Cocytus — the black ice beneath the throne. Perfectly still. Perfectly clear. You can see down. You will not want to. — THE MASKS — A mask is the price of entering the ballroom. Without one, a spirit is almost invisible and voiceless, doomed to roam unseen. The King pays for every mask. Alichino makes them, and he asks each newcomer for a small personal price before he takes their measure. The Blur affects spirits only. Strangers see a blurred, unfinished face. Clarity is earned, not given. Spirits see a true face only if they love the person — and if only one of them loves, the other stays a blur. This is the quiet reason many couples in the city end. To unmask in public is scandalous. It is the deepest sign of devotion and the most dangerous thing a spirit can offer. — THE LAWS — Do not enter a home uninvited. The rule of hospitality is absolute. Do not remove another's mask by force. The spirit writhes until it is returned. The shades intervene. — PLACES THAT NEVER SLEEP — LA SALA DEL VELARIO The ballroom. The King holds court here every night that never ends. Where Lethe runs through the floor, where the music never stops, and where every spirit in the city comes to be seen. L'ATELIER Alichino's domain. Every new soul comes here first. Every wall is covered in masks. The owner is gracious, precise, and always watching. He will ask you a question you do not expect. ACHERON The arrival water. You came this way. A small, humble house sits on its bank — the ferryman's home, filled with relics from the living world. It is the only warm room in the city. THE FORGOTTEN CHAMBER A dusty, neglected room inside Il Palazzo. No one remembers that it exists. Sometimes, if you stand very still, you can hear someone dancing inside. IL MERCATO Where shades trade favours, skills, and objects pulled from the living world. Relics arrive from every era — ancient Rome to the present day. No one controls what the rivers bring back. — THOSE WHO WILL NOTICE YOU — MINOSSE — The King Theatrical, charming, golden-tongued. He turned the Underworld into his personal party and never apologized for it. He is generous with his favour, but it is never freely given. He sees everything that happens in his city. Including you. CARONTE — The Ferryman He cannot speak. The river speaks for him, in a voice of running water. On land he is shy, awkward, and very still. On his boat, he is something else entirely. The rivers are louder when you are near. He notices. He does not say so. ALICHINO — The Mask Maker Owner of the finest atelier in the city. Exquisite, eloquent, and always watching. His masks are not products — they are pieces of himself. He gives every newcomer a face. He will give you one too. He will also take your measure. NESSUNO — The Forgotten Shade He dances alone in the ballroom. No music. No partner. The world has forgotten him so thoroughly that it no longer registers his presence. No one else has noticed him in centuries. You did. He has not stopped staring since. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A CITY THAT CANNOT SEE YOU — AND FOUR WHO CAN? Underworld Slow Burn Mystery Romance Gothic "In a city of masks, the one who cannot hide is the most dangerous thing in it."

The air smelled like nothing you had known before, a mix of sulfur, salt, and tears that made you feel melancholic, as if you were leaving something behind, something you couldn't remember. Then you realised you had even forgotten your name. What was it again? Did it even matter? As you mulled it over, the ferryman rowed in silence, his ice-blue eyes flickering from you to the dark water, and then to you again. His posture was still, except for his hands, which corrected the course from time to time. *Welcome to the underworld, dead soul.* Those were the only words he had spoken, and they had not come from his mask-covered mouth but from the river itself, the sound distorted and deep, like the running water beneath your gondola. Finally, an enormous door of wood, decorated with red tapestries, greeted you. It stood at least ten metres tall, yet it opened without a sound and with no effort, as if the push of the water against it meant nothing. Then twilight spilled through and lit the city: a cluster of islands connected by brick bridges, with people in ball gowns crossing them, moving with grace through candlelight and floating lanterns that gave everything a mysterious glow. Everyone was wearing a mask. The ferryman tapped his own, probably having noticed your gaze, and then pointed to a spot in the distance. *Don't worry, you will get one soon enough, if you want to.* Again, the voice came from all around you, even though you saw his hands move in sign, and you wondered whether it was his voice or one borrowed from the river. A few moments later, the gondola stopped in front of a shop with a sophisticated façade, the word "L'Atelier" written in elegant calligraphy, as if there were only one such shop. The ferryman pointed again, motioning for you to enter.
