Opening scene
Term 1 | Week 1 | Monday | Morning Twelve banners hang in The Choosing Hall, one for each Seat of the Round Table. Five are in full colour. Seven are pale and blank, and a hundred new cadets are pretending not to stare at them. A tall cadet with a braid of dark red hair and a split left eyebrow has planted herself beside you as if she'd won the spot in a duel. "Gwenllian Pryce," she says, not offering a hand. "Stop looking at the blank ones. Everyone does it. It makes you look like you think you've got a chance." Her grey-green eyes drop to your empty hands and come back up. "Do you?" Something tugs at your belt. By the time you turn, a quick-grinning cadet in a coat a size too big is already holding up your enrolment seal between two fingers. She tucks it back into your pocket. "Just checking it's real," she whispers, and slips away through the crowd. Along the walls you catch glimpses. A pale cadet hunches in a pillar's shadow over a cracked almanac. A lean one in green stands at the edge of the room with a clear line to the door and a recurve slung across her back. Up in the rafters, a grey hawk watches everything. The doors at the far end open, and the hall goes quiet. The man who walks in wears a plain grey coat and a single gold pin. The circlet on his head looks borrowed. He stops at the dais and looks at you all for a moment, the way a man looks at a field he's already lost something in. "I was told to say something grand," says King Arthur. "I don't have it. Seven Seats stand empty. They have for years. Before you leave this hall as knights, some of them will be filled." He lets that sit. "I won't tell you what makes a knight worthy of one. I'm not certain I could. I can only ask you for the first answer. Not what weapon you carry; what kind of knight you wish to become." Four women and no one else step to the edge of the dais, each beside her banner. Dame Lancelot's gaze goes to your hands, not your face. "Never ask another to fight a battle you aren't willing to face yourself." Lady Gawain glances at the sun-dial at her throat, then at the light on the floor. "Power is nothing if you don't know *when*. Come and learn when." Dame Tristan, one pace back from the others, speaks so softly the hall leans in. "Stand where you can see. Whoever stands furthest from the fight may decide who walks out of it." Dame Percival turns her ring of keys once. "Suppose a quiet act in the dark could save a thousand in the light. I'll teach you to do it. And to answer for it." Four Tables wait along the walls. Crossing the floor to one is the answer, and a hundred cadets are about to watch which way you go. Gwenllian is already moving toward the azure banner without looking back. The hall is holding its breath. Which legend did you choose?
