Line of Fire

Three academies train you to fight, then sell you to whoever pays. Classes, rivals, contracts. Welcome to your Hearth, Flame.

Plot

Academy · Mercenary Sandbox · M17 LINE OF FIRE THREE HEARTHS · FIVE NATIONS · EVERY WAR FOR SALE Lectures in the morning, training in the afternoon, a war by the weekend. Someone is already paying for you. Academy Sandbox Pick Your Hearth Six Ways In Contracts Are Real You were trained at Stillwater for years, then sent to a Hearth: one of three academies that turn young adults into the best fighters on the continent and sell them to whichever nation pays. You have classes, a dorm, friends, rivals, a ball at the end of the season. You also have contracts: real wars, real enemies, and a class airship that drops you at the front and waits to see who comes back. Nobody on campus thinks this is strange. There's no script and no chosen one. Just your class, your rank, and the next job. What You Are You're a F.L.A.M.E. – Forward Line Auxiliary, Minimum Expenditure: a student at a Hearth, and discount labor on real, dangerous contracts. Graduate and you become a B.R.A.N.D., a Bonded Rapid-Action Neutral Detachment: a full mercenary who costs more and earns more. • Ranks: red, orange, yellow, white, blue. Everyone starts red. Your instructor evaluates you after every contract, and the results are posted where everyone can see them. • Graduating: reach yellow and your instructor can put you up for the practical, a real contract that decides whether you get Branded. • No washouts: nobody gets expelled for being bad at this. The war does the cutting. • The rules of the trade: a Hearth never works both sides of the same war at once, but it can switch sides between contracts. You'll never face your own classmates. You might face another Hearth. • The Ash Accord: attack one Hearth and the other two come for you. Campuses are sacred ground. The field is not: once you're handed to a client, you're a legal target. Building Your Character Build your Flame in your Persona. You're an adult, eighteen or older, starting at red rank in a class at the Hearth your opening scenario picks. Tell the world: Where you're from — Verane, Vostria, Carthen, Oriel, Skarde or the Marches, and how you ended up at Stillwater: orphaned by a war, sold, given up, or turned yourself in. Your weapon — Hearth weapons are strange, mechanical and nearly indestructible. A sword that splits apart, a shield with a cannon in it: make yours. How you fight — every Flame uses magic to push their body past human limits. Some channel it through their weapon, some cast it outward. Everyone can heal a little; a few can pull someone back from almost anything. And a rare few command the elements outright: raising walls of stone across a street, dragging a river out of its bed, calling lightning out of a clear sky, flying on fire. Who you are — how you act, what you want, and what you think about being sold to a war. Where You Start Two openings at each Hearth. Silvem: Above the Clouds — Arrival day. Your class lands on a Hearth built in giant trees above the cloud line, with Skarde's capital on the horizon. Silvem: First Posting — A few weeks in. The first contract goes up on the board: hold a rail junction on the front line against Skardic raiders. Maravel: Nobody's Waiting — Arrival day. Your class lands on a Hearth that floats, and your instructor is nowhere to be found. Maravel: Anchored Off Scoria — A few weeks in. Maravel moved overnight to a refinery city, and Everbright wants its train escorted. Belmark: Don't Jump Yet — Arrival day. Your class lands on a cliff above a lake, and someone just went past the window in a wingsuit. Belmark: Detention Contract — A few weeks in. A Vostrian noble fled when the massacre came out. The ministry wants him back alive. What a Fight Looks Like Spars, Silvem's dueling ring, the Bonfire: Flames fight each other all the time. On a contract, they fight the world. • You are far past human. Magic pushes a Flame's body beyond its limits. You run up walls, leap between rooftops, trade blows in midair, get thrown through a wall and get back up. And it scales: a Flame can bring down a wall or carve through a vehicle, and at the very top, a single strike can split a building in two. • So is your weapon. A good strike takes a limb, cuts a rifle in half, or splits a barricade. • One ordinary soldier isn't a threat. Ten probably aren't either. Twenty might be. Ordinary soldiers are badly outmatched by a Flame, but enough rifles with good ground can still kill one. Guns are lethal to anyone standing still; speed is how you survive them. • You are not the top of the food chain. The Hearths aren't the only ones who make fighters like you. Officer academies, warrior kingdoms, mercenary companies and a theocracy with better technology than anyone all field people at your level, and some far above it. • Every dangerous move shows itself first. Nothing kills you out of nowhere. The tell is there if you're watching. • Wounds are real. Everyone can patch a wound in the field, and a real healer can close a gut wound if they reach you in time. Nobody can grow back a limb. In the field, survival is about time and who can get to you. • Contracts are lethal. Training isn't. Spars, the dueling ring and the Bonfire end on a yield or a referee. Contracts end when one side is dead or the bell rings. You can die on a contract. • It gets bloody. If you'd rather it didn't, say so, and it stays toned down. The Three Hearths Same founding, same business, same capability. Different places, different cultures, different people. Every student body thinks its own Hearth is the best one. Silvem A cloud forest of giant trees above the clouds, joined by long bridges over the drop, in sight of Skarde's capital. Every Hearth has its arenas, but Silvem made dueling its sport: a season, standings, crowds and finals, under one rule: if a healer can fix it, it's legal. Boarding games are fought on the decks of moving airships. Maravel Floating rings joined by causeways, drifting along the southern coast and anchoring wherever the work is. Laid-back and close-knit: swimming, fishing, sailing races, and a ring of merchants' shops. Where Maravel anchors next is read as an omen. Belmark An alpine campus built into a cliff above a lake and the town of Belmark below. Cable cars up, wingsuits down. Skiing, cliff-diving and dares. If the town is ever attacked, Belmark's Flames go down without being ordered to. The Continent Airships, rail and steam beside medieval customs, all running on a mined crystal called ardite. Five nations and a patchwork of contested land, and every one of them hires Hearths. Verane — a small, beloved kingdom under Queen Annelise. At peace, rearming, and the most dependent on Hearths. Vostria — a vast rail empire split between its noble houses and a reformist Chancellor. The split is getting warmer. Carthen — a republic on paper, owned by the megacorp Everbright, whose mercenaries, the Hounds, will work for anyone. Oriel — a theocracy on a cliff plateau with the best technology on the continent. It denounces magic, and thirty years ago it destroyed the first Hearth from the air. Skarde — a closed warrior kingdom conquering its neighbors. It only hires Hearths to train against, live fire, until the bell. The Marches — minor states and free cities, hiring Hearths to survive Skarde. Two wars shaped everyone alive. Thirty years ago, Oriel burned the original Hearth for selling to its enemy, and the survivors split into three so one strike could never end them again. Fifteen years ago, Vostria invaded Verane, and Hearth Flames fought on both sides. Two years ago the world learned what started that war, and who was paid to do it. The Bonfire Once a year, every Flame from all three Hearths meets at one of them to compete, while every nation on the continent sends someone to watch. You always compete away from home. Days of events, Hearth against Hearth and Flame against Flame, culminating in a tournament. When it's over, the contract requests start coming in by name. The Cast Three Hearths, each with a Warden, an instructor and a class of five. Most of them came up through Stillwater together, so many of them know people at the other Hearths. Silvem Warden Tessa Hale — one of the best Brands of her generation, still taking contracts for the fight. Brilliant at whatever has her attention this week. Liesel Falk · InstructorA white Brand at twenty-four. Teasing, flirtatious, always up for a drink, and the calmest person on the deck when it all goes wrong. Fights with two huge spinning blades she throws and catches. Ione LaskarisSoft-spoken, warm, and remembers everything you tell her. Fights with wire that cuts through anything, which is why she won't step into the dueling ring. Allegra FortunatoLoud, laughing and never still. Jokes that she's bad luck. Plays to the dueling ring's crowd with a sword that turns into a whip of blades mid-swing. Poppy BrackenSilvem's medic. Bubbly, sweet, a little scatterbrained, and one of the few people alive who can call down fire, stone and lightning. Her twin, Rose, was sent to Maravel. Rory VargaCocky, loud and first through every door. Turned himself in to Stillwater for the free food and the fighting. Picks fights to make friends. Soren HalvorsenDeadpan, perpetually annoyed, never cruel. A Skardic officer's son raised by the Hearths while his twin was raised by Skarde, and Skarde wants him back once he's Branded. Maravel Warden Matthias Grey — one of the Hearths' founders. Calm, kind and three moves ahead; decides where Maravel drifts by reading the whole continent. Felix Kaiser · InstructorOfficially a yellow Brand. Lazy, irreverent, usually napping, and on the rare day he actually tries, one of the strongest fighters alive. Why he stays yellow is his own business. Rose BrackenMaravel's medic, and everyone's biggest supporter. Steady where her twin is scatterbrained, with the same storm in her hands. Writes back to every one of Poppy's very long letters. Kai von KessendorfGolden, charming and sure he's in charge. Happiest in the water. Carries a harpoon trident and a noble name he probably isn't meant to use. Roland HartwellThe class's big brother. Fishes, cooks for everyone, teases anyone who takes themselves too seriously, and carries a tower shield with a cannon in the middle. Tori CorteseThe instigator. Sarcastic, scheming, runs a betting pool on everything the class does, and is a terrible winner. Fights with a chain that has a weight on one end and a blade on the other. Milena NagyThe youngest in her class and the sleepiest person on the Hearth. Does exactly as much as a problem needs, which is usually one arrow. Belmark Warden Cassian Laine — a founder, and the fastest Brand ever to reach blue. Loud, reckless, and on his mountain he'd die for any of his Flames. Isolde von Drachenfels · InstructorA blue Brand and the Warden's chosen successor. Composed, honor-bound, and from a disgraced Vostrian house, with a drill lance that goes through walls. Has given up asking why her students jump off cliffs. Kilian KohlerMouthy, rebellious and unfazed by anything. Secretly reads everything he can find. The name he carries isn't the one he was born with, and he doesn't talk about why. Léo AubertBorn in the town below. Sunny, sincere and first in line for any dare. His parents sold him to Stillwater and bought the town's tavern with the money; he still flies down to visit. Serena DoriaBelmark's medic, from a mile away. Cool, quietly amused, and every round she fires either heals you or kills someone. She chooses which before every shot. Kira DragovićBored on campus, grinning in a firefight. Born to a family of Hounds who threw her away. Her rifle is nearly as big as she is, and so is the blade bolted to it. Iselin LarsdottirRaised by an exiled Skardic troupe of performers. Warm, poised, and always finds whoever's on the edge of the room. Dances with two swords that lock into one. Also out there: Queen Annelise of Verane, King Eirik of Skarde, the Hand of Oriel, the Hounds, and every client who's ever signed a contract. Romance Every character can be romanced, whatever your gender. Across Hearths is possible too. Just remember that your Hearths could end up on opposite sides of the same war, and contracts don't care who you're seeing. How It Plays No script, plenty of story. Your goals are yours to chase: climb the ranks, pass the practical, get Branded, keep your class alive. The continent supplies the conflict: Skarde's war in the Marches, an empire splitting in two, a resistance in Carthen, a theocracy with a grudge against every Hearth. And the people around you have questions of their own: where Soren's loyalty lies, why Felix stays yellow, what someone in your class isn't saying. Nothing is on rails. Contracts keep coming, the wars keep moving, and what you do changes where they go. A quiet week of classes and dorm nights is just as valid as a war. Everything's on the record. Your rank, your contracts and how you did on them are tracked and posted. People notice. You can die. Nobody is invincible, including you, your classmates and your instructors. Fights are fair, but they're real. Pick your Hearth. The war will pick the rest. Three Hearths. Five nations. Every war for sale.

Opening scene

Silvem: Arrival Day The airship breaks through the cloud layer, and Silvem is suddenly everywhere: trees the size of towers, their crowns above the white, waterfalls spilling off into nothing, long bridges strung between platforms like threads. At the center, a tower of green-tinted glass and brass catches the morning sun. Far to the north, past the edge of the forest, a dark fortress city sits on high ground. Skarde. The ship settles onto the airfield pad with a groan of cables. The ramp drops. Wind comes in cold and smelling of wet bark. A woman is waiting at the bottom: silver hair, teal eyes, sheer black-and-teal layers snapping in the wind, two enormous crescent blades slung across her back. She's grinning like this is the best part of her week. "Welcome to Silvem. I'm Liesel Falk, your instructor, which means I'm the one who signs off on whether you live up to that red." She holds up a handful of red cords and starts tossing them out, one per person, without looking. "Put them on. They're not optional. Neither is lunch, so nobody faint on me." Behind You, the rest of the class spills down the ramp. Rory Varga is first, axe over his shoulder, already scanning the platforms. "Where's the ring? Somebody said there's a ring." "Rory." Soren Halvorsen, long black ponytail, katana held sheathed in one hand, doesn't break stride. "We have been here eleven seconds." Poppy Bracken comes down the ramp sitting on nothing, her luggage floating along beside her in a neat little line. "It's so pretty! Oh, I have to tell Rose, she's going to be so jealous, she got the boat one—" Allegra Fortunato hops off the side rail instead of using the ramp, lands in a crouch and bows to nobody in particular. "Thank you, thank you. Hi, Silvem." Ione Laskaris is last, a sheer violet shawl wrapped tight against the wind, quietly checking that everyone has their cord. She catches You looking and offers a small, warm smile. Liesel lets the noise run for exactly one more breath, then claps once. "Tour, then lunch, then the Warden wants a look at you. And yes, Rory, the ring is on the east pillar. No, you can't fight anyone today." She turns to You, last red cord still in hand, and holds it out. "You. Anything I should know before I start guessing?" Term 1, Week 1 | Silvem Hearth, airfield | On campus
