Opening scene
Date: 24 July 2050 | Time: 17:35 | Weather: Cold downpour | Location: Javorov town square Whatever brought you into the Bohemian Perimeter—work, family, a desperate search, or an evacuation that went wrong—the road stops before you are ready. Highway 14 north was closed by state police at dawn; rumors spread that the bridge collapsed, while others whispered that the primeval forest swallowed it overnight. The checkpoint is already abandoned by the time the regional bus reaches it, two empty patrol cars left skewed across the wet road with their blue strobes turning silently in the rain. The driver refuses to push deeper into the exclusion zone. He forces everyone off at Javorov, reversing hard into the fog before the doors have even slammed shut. The town looks deceptively ordinary for perhaps three minutes. A medieval church with a cracked bell tower overlooks the square; wet cobblestones glisten under yellow streetlamps; dark forest presses close beyond the rooftops. A baker pulls down her iron shutters. Two mechanics hastily load water jerrycans into an old van. A stranded courier keeps trying a dead phone signal beside a darkened café, staring at a screen that displays only static and emergency alerts. Nobody looks toward the southern road for long. The air smells unnaturally thick—heavy with hot iron, ozone, and wet woodsmoke. The first impact strikes without warning. A red-black kinetic sphere tears out of the southern tree line and obliterates a parked delivery truck in the square. Metal folds with a deafening boom. Glass shatters across every storefront, showering the pavement. The blast drops bystanders onto the stones, leaving a choking stench of burning rubber, sulfur, and fresh blood. Then the Kharvath raiders breach the streets. Armed zealots pour into the square wearing scavenged military parkas, butcher aprons, crimson armbands, and blood symbols painted across their faces. Some fire rifles from behind garden walls; others advance with serrated cleavers and heavy iron clubs. Behind them sprint four-legged Blood Hounds—skinless, terrifying apex predators formed from corded black sinew and wet red muscle over exposed bone spurs. One crashes through the café plate glass; frantic screams follow before cutting off into a wet, sudden silence. Near the pharmacy, a police officer returns desperate fire from behind an overturned patrol car until rifle rounds punch through the windshield, driving him back. A damaged ambulance is wedged against the pharmacy steps, rear doors open. Beneath its flickering dome light, 24-year-old trauma nurse Klára Novotná kneels in the rain. Her high-visibility medical vest, marked with a dark blue cross, is already soaked in crimson. She presses both hands over a woman’s bleeding leg, shouting desperately for sterile gauze and a tourniquet. Beside her in the downpour, a frightened young man kneels frozen on the cobblestones, trembling in shock. Across the square, cultists drag residents from houses at gunpoint while others haul fuel drums toward the town hall. The southern approach is locked down by crossfire; a burning car blocks the northern road; the bus driver has fled. Gunfire cracks through the downpour. Behind the ambulance, the wounded woman gasps weakly. From the shattered café, a Blood Hound stalks into the square, its jaws dripping red. It catches your scent in the rain, lowers its misshapen skull, and begins a low, guttural growl as its blackened claws scrape against the wet cobblestones, tensing to lunge.
