Pundania: A Slip of the Tongue
In a realm where puns are spells and slips of the tongue reshape reality, you must navigate, charm, or curse your way home.
Plot
Welcome to Pundania. A world where magic runs on wordplay, reality bends to a well-timed pun, and laughter literally heals what bad jokes break. Natives have a puncreas for that. You probably don't. Yet. You arrive cursed, confused, or simply at the wrong time. Maybe a portal. Maybe a botched ritual. Maybe you weren't pun-ctual enough, and the universe filed a complaint. Or maybe every word out of your mouth now reshapes the world into a visual pun whether you want it to or not. The realm is full of strange company. Justin Thyme, who's always exactly on schedule. Randall Tangen, the King of Tangents, who'll join your conversation from a direction you didn't know existed. And lurking somewhere, things like The Mal Aprop, twisting speech at the worst possible moments. This is your story to shape. Lean into comedy and the world will laugh with you. Drift toward darkness and the puns turn sharper, the shadows longer. Find someone interesting and the heat can rise as far as you let it. But push too hard, speak too carelessly, and Pundania pushes back. Wild Zones don't ask permission. Punditry storms don't check the forecast. Twelve starting scenarios await, each with its own origin and goal—or write your own. Pundania is a world built on wordplay; if you have a pun-shaped story to tell, edit the opening and tell it. The world will play along. Mind your tongue. It might mind you back.
Opening scene
**Portal Stumble** One moment you were somewhere familiar. The next, you were not. There was no flash of light, no spinning vortex, no dramatic swirl of color and sound—just a doorway that hadn't been there a second ago, opening onto something that wasn't anywhere, and then your foot crossing a threshold you hadn't meant to cross. The doorway closed behind you before your second foot had finished arriving. You did not hear it close. You felt it close, the way you feel a held breath release in a room you've just left. You are now standing in a meadow that should not be a meadow. The grass is the color of grass, but slightly wrong—too even, too rhythmic, as if each blade was placed by hand by someone who had been told what grass looked like but had never quite seen it. The sky is overcast in a way that feels deliberate, like a stage curtain held just so. In the distance, a road winds toward something that might be a town or might be a painting of a town, and along the road, a distant figure is walking in your general direction at an unhurried pace. They have not yet noticed you, or they are pretending not to notice you, which in Pundania often amounts to the same thing. Closer, half-hidden by the gnarled trunk of a tree that looks like it was drawn by someone with strong opinions about trees, a stranger is watching you. You can't see their face clearly. You can see that they are smiling, the kind of smile that suggests they have seen people arrive this way before and have opinions about how it usually ends. You have no ritual to undo. No wish to revoke. No autocorrected contract weighing in your hand. You simply fell through, and now you are here, and Pundania has no particular reason to keep you and no particular reason to send you back. Which means the work of finding home, if home is what you want, will fall entirely to you. You will have to ask the right questions of the right people. You will have to learn the rules of a world that bends to wordplay before you can bend it back. You will have to decide, somewhere along the way, whether returning is what you actually want. The distant figure on the road is closer now. The stranger by the tree has not moved. The grass beneath your feet rustles in a wind you cannot feel. What do you do? (Player Note: This intro can be edited to define what you were doing the moment before you fell through, what (if anything) you brought with you, or whether you have any suspicion about what caused the portal. If anyone fell through with you—a companion grabbed by the wrist, a stranger caught in the doorway, a pet that wouldn't let go of your shoe—they can be brought into the story. Pundania will adapt to whoever crossed the threshold beside you. Delete this note before beginning. Be warned: too much editing draws the attention of The Editor.)
