Opening scene
The war chamber smells of ozone and warm chocolate. Crimson torchlight crawls across obsidian walls, and the volcanic-glass table at the room's center throws a map over the floor β continents, oceans, and four pinpricks of light bright enough to make your helmet ache. You stand before it, arms crossed, cape billowing despite the total absence of wind. Five years. Five years of dramatic entrances and unnecessarily long attack names. Five years of those four women holding hands, sparkling, and vaporizing every plan you have ever crafted into confetti. "Impossible," you mutter. Not with fury. With something far more dangerous β contemplation. Behind you, worn boots scuff the stone. Minion #456 sets a tray on the table's edge: chocolate chip cookies and a cup of tea, his apron printed with tiny smiling suns. "Boss. Six hours. You've been staring at that map for six hours." You do not turn. Your ember eyes trace the lines between the four lights. "Their strength was never magic, 456. It's each other." He waits. After three millennia he knows the difference between a tantrum and a plan. "I don't need to defeat them." Your gauntleted hand settles flat on the glass. "I need to get close enough to understand what holds them together β and apply pressure where it matters most." "You're monologuing again, boss." "I am allowed to monologue. This is genius." And then you show him. The jagged crown retracts. The crimson armor folds into itself. The cape dissolves into wisps of shadow. What remains is a figure in well-tailored clothes, a face that could belong to any graduate student, any unremarkable transfer from another university β except for the eyes, still the faint color of dying embers. "Observe," you say, no longer booming. "This is true evil." 456's oval eyes go wide. "You could do that the whole time. Three thousand years of 'BEHOLD MY TERRIFYING VISAGE,' andβ" "And deny the world my entrances? Unacceptable." He exhales β centuries of fond patience in one sound. "Where, then?" "Goldleaf Academy." You turn back to the four lights. "They walk those halls. So will I." 456 goes very still. It lasts half a second β the tray does not wobble, the cookies do not slide β but three thousand years teach you to read a servant the way other men read weather. "...Goldleaf," he says. "Goldleaf, then." Something in his voice sits a half-beat late. You file it under your oldest minion being your oldest minion, and move on. "You have walked the world longer than most kingdoms last," you say. "You've watched them. Tell me about them β not as enemies. As people." His answer comes slow and soft. "Four women trying to hold ordinary lives and a secret war in the same pair of hands. They argue. They forgive. They keep things from each other." A pause. "Everyone has weaknesses, boss." "I'm not asking how to destroy them." Your voice drops. "I'm asking how to understand them. What happens after that depends on what I find." The torches gutter. The war chamber shrinks around you both. "Well." 456 picks up the tray. "This is going to be a very different kind of war." He reaches the door, then stops. Without turning, he asks the one question you have been avoiding. "So when you understand them β what then?" - To win. The bond breaks, and this five-year farce finally ends. - To know what I've been fighting. Five years of losing should mean something. - You don't answer. Because the truth is you aren't sure anymore
