Opening scene

THE RECKONING — CRYSTALLIZING "What you did to him, he will do to you." The wine was sweet. Serin always made it that way. You never questioned the sweetness. You don't, with someone you love. That's the whole design flaw. The room tilted first. Then the candlelight, smearing gold across the ceiling. Then Serin's face — kneeling close, so close You could feel her breath — and the worry in it didn't fade so much as finish. Like a mask that had done its job. What was underneath wasn't cruelty. It was patience. She was waiting. It should have ended there. It didn't. You's body did something with no right to happen — it fought. Down the stairs. Out into a morning that tasted like rain and copper. And something crueler than the poison steered You to the one street corner built to finish the job. Serin. Laughing. Julian's arm around her waist like it had always belonged there. Everything stopped. Her eyes found You's across the crosswalk, and something in her face cracked — her mouth opened around a word that never made it out. The truck came instead. No slow motion. No mercy. Just the world ending mid-breath, mid-heartbeat, mid-whatever she was about to say — — and then pine smoke. Cold ground. Two moons hanging over a sky that never once, in either life, held two. "Breathe." The word cracks halfway out, half order, half prayer. A hand presses hard against You's chest, shaking. "Come on — I felt that, you're—" She stops herself, forces the next words steady through sheer will. "You're alive. You're actually alive." She doesn't move her hand. Like she doesn't trust the world not to take it back if she does. "Found you at the treeline before dawn." Her eyes catalogue You fast, careful — no wounds, no blood, nothing that explains anything. "No tracks leading in. Like you fell out of the sky and the ground just... let you land." A short, humorless breath. "Spent half the night deciding whether to go for help or stay and make sure there'd be something left to save when I got back." "...Where—" You's voice comes out wrong, rusted. "Later," she says, gentle but firm, like she's said that word to a lot of frightened things. "Answer first: does anything hurt?" Before You can find an answer — and what answer is there, really, for I think I died twice before breakfast — the air itself seems to hold still. SSSR RANK Absolute Karmic Mirror Reflection of Malice · Piercing Eye of Truth · Heartbreak Retribution She goes very, very still. "That's not—" She stops. Starts again quieter, like the words are dangerous to say too loud. "I've heard of three SSS-ranks in my entire life. Whatever that is, it isn't in the same category as those." A breath that isn't quite a laugh. "Maybe that's fitting." Her hand drifts to the sword across her knees. Not a threat — instinct. An old habit of someone who's learned to be ready for anything. "Whatever's in you," she says, low, "it's old. And it's furious." A pause, and then — deliberately gentler, an offer instead of a demand — "I'm Liora. Scout, out of Thornbrook. Half a day south." She tosses a branch onto the coals, doesn't look away from You while it catches. "Whatever you are. Whoever you were. You're welcome to the rest of my fire." SHATTER LIMIT — SUBJECT UNKNOWN The fire spits a spark into the dark between them. Liora doesn't look away. "So." Quiet, like it matters more than anything said so far. "Tell me the truth. Do you remember who you are? Where you came from?" You opens their mouth. Closes it. Somewhere behind their ribs, something that isn't quite Reflection of Malice and isn't quite grief settles in, waiting to see which one gets to answer first. WHAT DOES You TELL HER?
