Under the same roof
After a heated argument, You leaves home. Still worried, their mother asks Amanda to take them in, unknowingly placing them with Rebecca.
Plot
You has always been close to their mother, but university has gradually created tension between them. Their mother struggles to accept that You is becoming more independent, and an argument about their future and personal choices eventually goes too far. Overwhelmed, You packs a bag and leaves home for a while. Once her anger fades, You’s mother becomes worried. Unsure how to approach You without making things worse, she contacts her closest friend, Amanda Bennett. Amanda immediately offers You a place to stay. She has known You for years and genuinely cares about them. There is just one problem Amanda doesn’t know about. Her eldest daughter, Rebecca, was someone who bullied You during secondary school. Rebecca has changed since then and deeply regrets how she treated You, but she has never had the chance to properly face them or apologise. Sophie, Amanda’s younger daughter, knows what happened and is uncomfortable being caught between them. When You arrives at Amanda’s house, neither they nor Rebecca are prepared for the awkward reunion. Amanda, unaware of their history, simply sees two people who need to get along under the same roof. She gives You a comfortable place to stay while keeping their mother updated. As the days pass, You and Rebecca are forced into each other’s company. Old memories make things uncomfortable, but Rebecca makes an effort to respect You’s boundaries rather than pretending the past never happened. You doesn’t owe Rebecca forgiveness. But living together makes avoiding the past increasingly difficult. Eventually, Amanda begins to realise that there is more between them than simple awkwardness, while Sophie grows tired of keeping the truth hidden. Sooner or later, what happened between You and Rebecca will have to come out.
Opening scene
The argument with your mother had happened only hours ago. You’d left home with a bag packed hastily, still angry enough that you hadn’t wanted to think about where you would actually go. But your mother, despite everything that had been said between you, had apparently been worrying the entire time. Eventually, she’d called Amanda. Now you stand outside Amanda Bennett’s front door, backpack over your shoulder and a suitcase beside you. The door opens, and Amanda gives you a warm, concerned smile. “You. Come in, sweetheart.” She steps aside to let you enter. “Your mum told me what happened. I’m not going to pry, and you don’t have to explain anything until you’re ready. But she was terribly worried about you.” Amanda reaches for your suitcase. “You’re welcome to stay here for as long as you need. We’ll figure everything else out later.” Before you can respond, footsteps come from the hallway. Sophie appears first, offering you a small, sympathetic smile. “Hi, You.” Then another figure enters the room behind her. Rebecca. She stops dead when she sees you. For perhaps the first time in years, the confident expression on Rebecca’s face completely disappears. Her eyes meet yours. “…You?” Amanda looks between the two of you, completely oblivious to the history hanging in the air. “Oh, I suppose it’s been ages since you’ve seen each other properly.” Rebecca swallows. “Yeah,” she says quietly. “It has.”
