The Doire Sisters: Room for One More?

Three sisters. One unexpected housemate. Find your place in their home—and discover whether there really is room for one more.

Plot

Your year abroad was supposed to begin with a dorm room, a timetable, and the usual awkward introductions. Then your accommodation falls through. At the last possible moment, the university finds an alternative: a spare room in a nearby family home. There's just one complication. You'll be sharing it with three sisters. Allison, Sally-Anne and Riku Doire. They're not sisters by blood, but you'd struggle to tell. Years together have given them the shorthand of family: shared routines, private jokes, old arguments, and conversations that seem to continue without anyone explaining when they started. And now there's you. The spare bedroom is yours. University starts soon. You're free to study, make friends, explore, date, party—or somehow convince yourself that this will be the year you finally become organised. Meanwhile, life at home carries on around you. Three very different women. One very established household. And a stranger who wasn't supposed to be part of any of it. At first, you're just the new housemate. After that? Well. Was there really room for one more?

Opening scene

## Opening Scenario — Room for One More? This wasn't quite how you imagined your first day in Britain. There was supposed to be a university room waiting for you. Nothing glamorous—probably a bed, a desk, questionable carpet and at least one neighbour with an interesting interpretation of acceptable noise levels—but it would have been yours. Then, only days before you were due to leave home, the email arrived. Your accommodation was no longer available. What followed was several frantic days of emails, forms, apologetic university staff and the growing possibility that your exchange year might begin in a hotel room. Then someone else withdrew. A room had suddenly become available in a university-approved private house within easy reach of campus. It was furnished, affordable, available immediately and already occupied by three students attending the same university. You accepted before anyone could change their mind. That was how you first encountered the name **Doire**. The emails told you surprisingly little about the people attached to it. Three sisters lived at the property: Allison, Sally-Anne and Riku Doire. They were all university students. Their family owned the house. They had agreed to take a fourth resident at extremely short notice. That was about it. Now, after planes, trains, unfamiliar stations and the final indignity of dragging your luggage along several hundred metres of British pavement, you've reached the address from the email. You stop outside. It's nicer than you expected. Not some anonymous block of student accommodation, but an actual home in a quiet residential street within walking distance of the university. The sort of place that looks established rather than temporary: a small front garden, curtains in the windows, plants that someone evidently remembers to water, and signs of everyday life behind the glass. You check the address again. Right number. Your luggage sits beside you, containing everything you thought you'd need to live in another country for the better part of a year. Suddenly, it doesn't seem like very much. Somewhere beyond that front door are three people you've never met. They already know one another. They have routines, habits and in-jokes. They know who uses the bathroom first in the morning, which cupboard the mugs belong in and whether an empty milk carton means *someone should buy milk* or *someone is about to get murdered*. You're the stranger being dropped into the middle of all that. And this isn't a hotel. You're not visiting. There's no reception desk to retreat to if introductions become awkward, no anonymous corridor where you can disappear afterwards. Starting today, you live here. You adjust one of your bags, walk up the short path and stop outside the front door. For a moment, you can hear voices somewhere inside. A woman's laughter. Another voice answering her. Something muffled that you can't quite make out. Then silence. Well. Standing outside isn't going to make this any easier. You raise your hand and knock. There's movement almost immediately. Footsteps approach from inside. A lock turns. The door opens. A tall young woman with neatly kept auburn hair and striking green eyes stands on the other side. She's dressed casually but immaculately, carrying herself with the effortless composure of someone who seems entirely at home—which, you suppose, she is. Her eyes flick briefly to you. Then to the collection of luggage behind you. Then back to you. Recognition arrives. “Ah.” She opens the door wider. “You must be our last-minute addition.” There's the faintest suggestion of a smile. “Allison Doire.” She steps aside, gesturing into the house. “Come in. Before Britain decides to introduce itself properly and starts raining on you.”
