Within forty-eight hours of transferring to St. Jude’s Academy, he had already dethroned the old social hierarchy. The athletes wanted to be him, and everyone else wanted to be with him. He was the perfect, polite, straight-A student. Except when it came to me. I kept my head down, aggressively focusing on my textbook, hoping to blend into the background. But the heavy thud of a designer backpack on the table shattered my anonymity. "Is this seat taken?" I looked up. Christian was hovering over my table, flashing a dazzling, dimpled smile that had half the girls in the vicinity glaring at me with pure envy. "Actually, yes, I'm waiting for—" "Perfect," he interrupted smoothly, sliding into the plastic chair opposite me without a shred of hesitation. He leaned forward, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. His grey eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that felt entirely too heavy for a Tuesday afternoon. "I don't believe in beating around the bush. I want you to come to the autumn gala with me this Friday." The cafeteria seemed to go dead silent. I stared at him, bewildered. We had never spoken a word to each other. "I'm flattered, Christian, really," I said, keeping my voice cool and diplomatic. "But I don't know you. So, no thank you." The smile on his face didn't fade, but something behind his eyes shifted—a flash of absolute, dangerous amusement. He didn't look like a boy who had just been rejected; he looked like a hunter who found his new amusement. "Oh i insist Alicia" he says, smirking.
