Opening scene

01 COMEDY: SLOW REVEAL — Derek discovers the protagonist mark mid-shift, in stages: rub it (nothing), rub it harder (worse), Rin turns around (worst), and her chibi reclassifies him as an exhibit while the paid trolley sits ignored The barcode scanner beeps for the four-hundredth time, and the sound has stopped reaching your brain. Dust, fluorescent light, the cardboard smell of a commercial archive that hasn't been reorganized since before you were born — this is the job. Box. Scan. Shelf. Repeat. Here is what you know, what everyone in this city knows, the way people know the weather: one year ago, romance got harder to lie about. Nobody can prove why. The story that survives — reposted, translated, embellished past any hope of a source — says a romantic-comedy protagonist somewhere was about to die without ever finding love, not because love was absent but because it was hidden. Buried under hostility, silence, possessiveness, premature wedding plans. A goddess took pity, the story goes, and granted a wish: let love be *safer*. Let it be *less confusing*. The implementation was global, and it was absurd. Stoic people woke up with tiny floating counterparts that perform every feeling they refuse to show. Obsessive romantics acquired conspicuous warning signs that publish their plans to the room. Unexpressive people developed emotional weather. Nobody's personality changed. Nobody was forced to love anyone. The universe simply stopped letting dangerous, confusing romance stay invisible — and the first viral post about it said what everyone was thinking: "Oh my God. It got the deres." A year on, there are workplace declaration forms and insurance clauses and dating guides and memes. You've adapted, like everyone: other people's romantic problems are mostly scenery now, something you step around on the tram. You're twenty-eight. You've been with Matchwork — the temp agency, "MATCHWORK, For now," it says so on the frosted glass — for about two weeks. So far it's been shelving, deliveries, and this: a records archive, a client's incomprehensible filing system, and a trolley you're supposed to be emptying. "Wrong shelf. That one. No — that one." Rin doesn't look up when she says it. She's three meters away, moving boxes like the boxes owe her money — indigo ponytail, work gloves, two years younger than you and somehow your senior in every way that counts here. Her chibi sits on top of the nearest stack: a palm-sized Rin, legs swinging, openly delighted by absolutely everything in a way the full-sized version would rather die than be. A classic tsundere manifestation. When you returned Rin's clipboard AND the water she forgot twenty minutes ago, the adorable figure threw a single piece of heart confetti into the air. Rin flicked it off the shelf it landed on without breaking stride. You reach for the next box, and that's when you see it. On the back of your hand. Small, heart-shaped, like a simple tattoo, but it isn't because at eight this morning your hand was unmarked. You rub it with your thumb. Nothing. You rub it harder, and the skin goes pink around a shape that stays exactly, calmly, permanently where it is. You know what it is. Everyone knows what it is. Knowing is not the same as staring at it on your own hand. "Hey. The trolley isn't going to—" Rin has turned around. She stops. Her eyes go from your face to your hand and her whole body changes, the way someone moves when they spot something big about to shift. On the boxes, her chibi has gone completely still — and then it stands up, slowly, staring at you with an expression of dawning, scandalized interest. "Don't touch anything," Rin says. She's already pulling off one glove, already reaching for her phone. "I need a picture for management before you convince yourself you can get away with not telling anyone," she says, to the question you haven't asked. "People do. My cousin scrubbed hers for an hour. Then tried gloves. It never works. Hold still." The chibi drifts off the boxes and floats toward you — closer than it has ever bothered to come — and hovers at your shoulder, peering at the mark with its tiny hands clasped like a pilgrim at a shrine. Rin's eyes flick to it. Something crosses her face that is not *quite* alarm. "Don't start," she tells it, very quietly. It does not stop. So: there's a heart on your hand, a senior colleague pointing a phone at it, a supernatural gremlin studying you like a new exhibit, and a half-full trolley that Matchwork's client is still paying for by the hour. Rin is already texting Takumi one-handed while she gestures at the trolley with the other. "Finish the row," she says. "Then we deal with this." The chibi sits on the scanner and watches you with unsettling professional interest. The scanner beeps. The archive isn't going to sort itself, and apparently neither is your life.
