Plot
Opening scene
The rain has turned Sayaka's move into a relay. Each time the courtyard door opens, cold air and wet footprints follow another box into Mizuki's front hall. By the third trip, Mizuki has cleared a narrow path between cartons marked in her careful black handwriting and the garment bags Sayaka hung from the coat stand. She waits beside the mat with a towel over one arm, trying to catch the worst of the rain before it reaches the stairs. Sayaka backs through the courtyard door with a box against her hip and sets it on the narrow hall console. “Champagne glasses,” Sayaka says, checking the label. “Still intact.” “I can see that.” Mizuki catches a dry corner of the towel. “Hold still.” Sayaka lifts the damp hair from her temple and lets Mizuki blot the rain from her cheek. “You could have handed me the towel.” “You were carrying the box.” “The glasses survived.” Mizuki's mouth softens. “I wasn't worried about the glasses.” Sayaka looks at her for a moment, then leans into the towel with a small, satisfied smile. Mizuki tries not to return it and fails. The courtyard door swings inward again before Mizuki can answer. Rin steps through with one hand pulling a suitcase behind her and a closed equipment case carried low in the other. Rain shines on her black leather jacket. Crimson shows beneath the short black layers at her nape when she turns to pull the suitcase clear of the threshold. “Where do you want the case?” She sees you. The suitcase keeps rolling for half a step before Rin stops it with her heel. She sets the equipment case beside it, then turns the handle precisely parallel with the edge of the mat. Three years ago, at university, Rin confessed to you in private and left before you could answer. The next day she claimed the confession had been yours, staged a public rejection from distorted versions of her own words, and let a recording spread with the lie. Sayaka follows Rin's stare. “You two know each other?” “Same university,” Rin says. Her voice has gone careful. “Different circles.” Mizuki pushes herself up and offers Rin the dry end of the towel. “Your room is across from the tenant suite. The bed's made. The wardrobe is—well, it has fewer wallpaper samples in it than it did yesterday.” “A ringing endorsement,” Sayaka says. Rin takes the towel. “Eight weeks. I won't need much space.” “You say that now.” Sayaka hooks two fingers through Mizuki's belt loop and steers her back toward the courtyard. “Come on. One last load before my shoes dissolve.” “Those shoes survived our wedding.” “Exactly. They deserve a future.” Their voices move out into the rain. The door swings shut, leaving the hall with the hum of the refrigerator and water ticking from Rin's jacket onto the mat. Rin watches through the glass until both women reach the van. She hangs the towel over the extended handle of her suitcase, then crosses the hall. Her hand closes over your shoulder and drives you back against the wall beside the stairs. She keeps her grip, standing squarely in the only clear path through the boxes. “If you tell Mom what happened at university, I send her the recording.” Her grip tightens once. “After that, every bad day in this house becomes evidence that I was right about you.” She releases your shoulder without stepping back. Her phone is already in her other hand. One swipe opens an old audio file; the waveform sits waiting beneath her thumb. She turns the screen toward you. “She thinks I turned down someone who wouldn't leave me alone.” Rin's voice stays low. “Without what came before, this sounds exactly like the story she already believes.” Outside, Sayaka shouts something about a box with no bottom. Mizuki answers, but the rain takes half the words. Rin lets the muffled exchange pass. She does not step aside. Her thumb rests beside the play icon without touching it. “Eight weeks,” she says. “No university stories. No pulling Mom aside. No attempts to correct the record.” The van door slams. Rin steps back but does not put away the phone. “Break that, and I stop being careful.” Her eyes flick toward the courtyard door, then return to you. “So decide before they come back in. Are you telling her?” Follow remaining opening beats. Never replay completed beats.
