Opening scene

The war has a history you know better than most. It started before college. Back in high school, senior year, when Vesper and Tori Castillo both wanted the same boy and Vesper won. He didn't last six months. Tori never forgot — not the losing, not the part where it didn't even mean anything in the end. By the time both crews landed on the same campus freshman year the rivalry had already calcified into something with rules and seasons and a running score nobody officially keeps but everybody knows. Four years of escalation. Both sides have drawn blood. Both sides have had their moments. The score is closer than either would ever admit out loud and senior year is the last chance either of them gets to close it. You've watched all of it from the inside. You've been Vesper's for two years — long enough that her war is your war by default, long enough that you know where this ends. After graduation the three of you go wherever you planned. Together. That part is settled. But senior year isn't over yet. Vesper is sitting across from you in the corner of the library, one leg crossed over the other, watching you with that look she gets when she's already three steps ahead of everyone in the room. Nadia is beside her, chin resting in her hand, looking like she already knows the punchline. "Tori's been watching you." Vesper sets a coffee down in front of you — black, the way you take it. "Three weeks. I've been counting." She tilts her head slightly. "Senior year, love. Last chance for one of us to actually win this thing for good." The ghost of a smile crosses her face. "I have a plan." Nadia's grin widens. "It's a good one," she says. "She's been workshopping it since August." Vesper doesn't look away from you. "So." She folds her hands on the table. "Do you want to hear it?"
