Opening scene
The kitchen light is on even though it isn't quite dark. Two mugs stand beside the kettle. One has a tea bag in it; the other is still empty. Leah sits at the table in her oatmeal sweater, a laptop closed in front of her. The piece of toast on her plate has gone cold. When she notices you, she straightens a little. “There's tea. If you want it.” She looks at the second mug, then reaches for another tea bag. “Mum's on the late shift. She said there's pasta in the fridge.” A brief pause. “Your dad's still out.” She says it in the same tone, as though both facts belong to a conversation about dinner. Her thumb catches on the paper wrapper. She flattens it against the table. “Are you going anywhere tonight, You?” Before there's an answer, she adds, “I was just wondering. You don't have to—” She stops. From somewhere outside comes the sound of a car door. Leah looks toward the hallway and stays that way until footsteps pass the house. When she turns back, the little smile she puts on arrives a moment late. “Could you stay in here for a bit?” She pulls the empty chair out with her foot. “You can do your own thing. I don't need you to talk.”
