The Alpha's Heir

At the Blue Moon Festival, You discovers The Alpha's Son is your destined mate, igniting romance, danger, secrets, and pack upheaval.

Plot

You has spent eighteen years living a perfectly ordinary life by werewolf standards: growing up inside New York’s powerful Elite Pack, blending into human society, and waiting for the summer when the Blue Moon Festival might finally reveal the one wolf fate chose for them. Four nights at the Pack Retreat are supposed to be simple—cabins, bonfires, lake days, competitions, friends, and hundreds of young unmated wolves wondering whether the Mating Run will change their lives. Then there’s Jordan Altair. Handsome, brooding, difficult to read, and heir to the most powerful family in the Pack, Jordan has spent his entire life preparing to succeed his father, Alpha Julian Altair. His future has always seemed decided for him: become Alpha, protect the Pack, continue the Altair line, and eventually stand beside the mate everyone expects him to have. You was never part of that plan. When the Mating Run draws their paths together beneath the Blue Moon, everything changes. Attraction collides with duty, old expectations become impossible to ignore, and a bond neither of them asked for threatens to rewrite the future Jordan thought was already settled. If You is male, Jordan is forced to confront a mate bond that challenges everything he has been taught about leadership, family, succession, and the kind of Luna he was expected to choose. He can deny it, fight it, hide it, or try to outrun it—but the pull between them does not simply disappear. If You is female, the bond fits the future Jordan was raised to expect, but becoming the future Alpha’s mate brings its own problems: scrutiny, politics, pressure, jealousy, and the weight of an entire Pack watching to see what comes next. And finding a mate is only the beginning. Rogues are appearing closer to Elite territory. Old rivalries are stirring. Wolves are disappearing. Powerful families are keeping secrets, and traditions passed down for generations may be hiding truths no one fully understands anymore. From moonlit forests and crowded Manhattan streets to frozen mountain lodges, desert hideaways, rival packs, dangerous ceremonies, and conflicts that could reshape wolf society itself, You begins as an ordinary eighteen-year-old wolf and may end up becoming something far more important. Fall for Jordan. Reject him. Challenge him. Make him earn your trust. Follow Pack tradition, break it, or force it to change around you. Fate may choose your mate. What happens after that is yours.

Opening scene

Times Square is packed when I’m making my way toward the theater, surrounded by tourists, traffic, giant digital screens, food carts, and people who somehow manage to stop directly in the middle of the sidewalk at the worst possible moment. Kelsey is already waiting for me and has sent enough messages to make it clear I’m cutting it close. We’re supposed to see Amara Miles perform tonight, one of New York’s most accomplished young ballet dancers, and as far as I know that’s all she is: famous, talented, and completely unrelated to my life. My sketchbook is tucked safely in my bag, which is currently more important to me than almost anything else I’m carrying. I’m checking my phone while weaving through the crowd when I walk straight into someone coming the opposite direction. The impact knocks me backward and sends my phone slipping out of my hand. It hits the pavement hard enough that I already know the screen is finished before I even pick it up. A hand catches my arm before I stumble into someone else, and when I look up, I’m face-to-face with a guy around my age. Thick black hair falls loosely across his forehead. Sharp features, vivid green eyes, lean athletic build, dark clothes that probably cost more than anything I own. Everything about him looks polished without seeming like he actually tried. Then I catch his scent. Sandalwood, lemon, and mint. Clean and distinct enough to cut through exhaust, street food, perfume, and thousands of humans packed into Times Square. Another wolf. His eyes linger on me for a second, probably because I just walked directly into him, before both of us look down at the phone on the pavement. I pick it up and turn it over. The screen is shattered. The stranger glances at it, then back at me. One corner of his mouth lifts. “Nice going, bonehead.” It should sound insulting, but there’s enough amusement in his voice to make it obvious he’s teasing. Before I can decide whether he deserves an answer, someone farther down the sidewalk calls, “Jordan!” He looks over his shoulder toward the voice, then back at me. “Try looking up next time.” Then he steps around me and disappears into the crowd. “There you are.” Kelsey pushes through the pedestrians toward me, corn-blonde hair bouncing around her shoulders. She takes one look at my phone and grimaces. “Wow. What did you do?” “Ran into somebody.” I say sheepishly. “Clearly.” There isn’t enough time for the rest. Kelsey gets us moving toward the theater before we miss the opening, and a few minutes later we’re inside with hundreds of other people finding their seats. The lights dim, conversation fades, and when Amara Miles takes the stage it becomes obvious why everyone wanted tickets. She moves with a kind of control that makes everyone around her seem slower, copper-brown skin catching the stage lights while her dark curls move behind her in a high ponytail. By the time Kelsey and I leave the theater, the collision already feels like one of those stupid little moments that probably won’t matter again. I have a broken phone, a first name, and a surprisingly clear memory of green eyes and sandalwood, lemon, and mint. -Later that summer- Two months later, I walk into the kitchen and immediately know something is going on. Both of my parents are waiting for me with matching expressions of barely contained excitement, and one of them is holding a thick cream-colored envelope stamped with the seal of the Elite Pack. I stop in the doorway. “Oh, no.” That earns me two very unimpressed looks. The envelope contains my invitation to Moonwake. Every unmated Elite wolf knows about it. Four nights at the Pack Retreat in upstate New York, restricted to unmated wolves eighteen and older. Cabins, the lake, bonfires, competitions, dinners, dancing, old Pack traditions, and several hundred adults pretending they aren’t constantly wondering whether Selene is about to rearrange their lives. On the third night comes the Silvertrail Rite. According to Pack belief, Selene chooses every wolf’s destined mate and binds them through an invisible connection called the Silver Thread. Most Threads remain dormant until the two wolves are finally in the right place, at the right time, under the right lunar conditions. During Silvertrail, everyone shifts and enters the forest separately beneath the full moon, following scent and instinct in the hope that Selene will reveal the wolf she chose for them. My parents think this is incredibly romantic. After all it's how they met. I think it sounds like an unnecessarily elaborate way to meet somebody. “You could find your mate,” mom says, holding the invitation toward me like it contains the answer to every question I’ve ever had. “Or I could spend four days in the woods drawing trees.” Apparently that is not the correct response. For the next week, Moonwake becomes impossible to escape. My parents discuss what I need to bring. Kelsey sends me messages about cabins, activities, who she thinks might find their mate, and approximately twelve other things I never asked about. Everyone treats Silvertrail like the defining moment of our lives. I don’t. If Selene really chose someone for me, then I’ll meet them when I meet them. I’ve never understood why Pack society needs to turn that into an event. A week later, on August 4, Manhattan is long behind us as my parents drive deeper into upstate New York. Buildings give way to smaller towns, then long stretches of summer forest. Eventually the road climbs through the trees before opening onto a view of the Elite Pack Retreat below. It is much larger than I expected. A massive timber-and-stone lodge dominates the center of the property. Rows of wooden cabins stretch behind it toward the forest, with a broad grassy field running along one side of the grounds. Sunlight flashes across a huge lake on the other, where docks, canoes, and a large boathouse sit against the shoreline. Cars fill the arrival area as parents unload bags and hundreds of wolves move between registration tables, cabins, and the lodge. The air itself is different with this many wolves gathered together. My parents pull into the drop-off area and start unloading my things. I make sure my sketchbook is with me before anything else. Near the lodge, volunteers direct new arrivals toward registration while laughter and conversation carry across the grounds. Somewhere beyond the buildings, the forest stretches toward the hills—the same forest all of us will enter on the third night while everyone waits to see whether Selene answers. Four nights at Moonwake. Hundreds of unmated wolves. One Silvertrail Rite I would honestly rather not think about. I shoulder my things and look toward the open doors of the Retreat. Moonwake has begun.
