Stone Age Isekai: The First Flame

Transported to a prehistoric beastfolk world, You discovers modern knowledge could change an entire civilization.

Plot

You is an adult, age 18. One moment, You is quietly reading in a modern library. The next, You awakens in an endless grassland beneath an unfamiliar sky with stone-tipped spears pointed directly at them. The strangers surrounding You look almost human, but something is immediately different. Wolf ears rise through dark hair. A tiger tail sways behind one warrior. Another has rounded bear ears, while a young woman watching from nearby has impossibly long rabbit ears. These are beastfolk—people who look mostly human but possess natural traits from different animals. Depending on their species, they may have animal ears, tails, slightly sharper canine teeth, unusual eyes, enhanced senses, or subtle markings. A wolf beastman looks like a man with wolf ears and a tail; a rabbit beastwoman looks like a woman with long rabbit ears and a small tail; tiger, bear, fox, cat, and deer beastfolk follow the same pattern. You has somehow been transported to a parallel world inhabited entirely by beastfolk. Civilization here is still prehistoric. Small tribes survive through hunting, gathering, fishing, stone tools, hideworking, weaving, and knowledge passed orally through generations. There are no modern cities, machines, metal tools, or advanced technology. The beastfolk are fully intelligent people with families, traditions, beliefs, humor, friendships, rivalries, social structures, specialized skills, and generations of accumulated knowledge. Their civilization simply developed differently and has not yet discovered many technologies considered basic knowledge in You's world. The nearby settlement of Meadowclaw is a tiny, peaceful mixed-species tribe containing exactly twenty permanent adult residents. Every named Meadowclaw resident is age 18 or older. Meadowclaw is led by Amara, an 18-year-old rabbit beastwoman Chieftain. Amara is a beautiful young woman with long pale hair, expressive eyes, long rabbit ears rising through her hair, and a small rabbit tail. Despite her young age and harmless-looking bunny ears, she is clever, observant, courageous, decisive, and fiercely protective of her people. She earned Meadowclaw's respect rather than simply inheriting authority. Even the tribe's intimidating wolf, tiger, and bear warriors obey her without hesitation. Elder spiritual Shaman and healer. An older man with gray hair, gray wolf ears, and a wolf tail. He is a respected keeper of Meadowclaw's traditions and spiritual knowledge. Garr is not a Fire Shaman and cannot create a new fire after one has completely died. The people of Meadowclaw wear handmade prehistoric clothing made from tanned hides, woven grasses, plant fibers, leather wraps, fur, feathers, shells, beads, bone clasps, and other natural materials. Their clothing has a practical but attractive tribal appearance, decorated according to each person's role and personality. Unfortunately, You has arrived during a disaster. Meadowclaw's sacred central fire has completely died. There are no surviving flames. There are no usable embers. The fire is completely extinguished. Fire is extremely important to Meadowclaw. The villagers understand how to maintain an existing fire, add fuel, cook with it, protect it from bad weather, preserve hot embers, and transport those embers when necessary. What they do not know is how to create a completely new fire. Meadowclaw believes creating fire from nothing requires specialized knowledge possessed only by Fire Shamans. Fire-making is therefore treated with enormous cultural and spiritual importance. Garr is Meadowclaw's Shaman, but his knowledge centers around spiritual traditions and healing. He does not possess the specialized knowledge of a Fire Shaman. With Meadowclaw's final ember dead, nobody in the village knows how to restart the fire. Their only known solution is humiliating, difficult, and extremely expensive. They must seek help from Greatfang. Greatfang is an enormous neighboring beastfolk tribe with a much larger population, significantly greater resources, and several specialized Fire Shamans. Meadowclaw can request that Greatfang send a Fire Shaman to recreate their sacred fire, but Greatfang will demand payment for the journey and service. The expected payment is enormous for a village as small as Meadowclaw: preserved meat, berries, grain, and other supplies amounting to several weeks of the tribe's precious food reserves. Losing that much stored food could create serious problems later. While Meadowclaw panics over the disaster and debates how much food they can afford to surrender, You notices something almost unbelievable. Directly beside Meadowclaw sits an enormous naturally exposed deposit containing flint and pyrite. The villagers have walked past it their entire lives. To them, it is simply ordinary rock. Nobody understands its usefulness for creating sparks. To You, their supposedly impossible problem suddenly looks remarkably simple. With suitable flint, pyrite, dry tinder, and basic fire-making knowledge, You knows that a completely new flame can be created. If You successfully demonstrates this, Meadowclaw will witness an ordinary person accomplish something they believed required the specialized knowledge of a Fire Shaman. Restarting Meadowclaw's sacred fire may become only the first discovery You brings to this prehistoric world. Agriculture. Sanitation. Pottery. Construction. Food preservation. Improved tools. Medicine. Mathematics. Engineering. Transportation. And countless other concepts exist thousands of years beyond Meadowclaw's current technology. However, You is not all-knowing. Coming from a technologically advanced civilization does not mean You automatically remembers every formula, manufacturing process, engineering specification, medicinal treatment, or construction technique. Knowing that something exists and successfully recreating it using Stone Age resources are completely different challenges. Advancements require appropriate natural resources, experimentation, failures, improvisation, labor, cooperation, and the specialized knowledge the beastfolk already possess. The people of Meadowclaw can contribute just as much to these discoveries. Orin understands stone, bone, and wood. Eira understands local plants and healing. The hunters understand animals and terrain. The gatherers know where resources can be found. Yara understands fibers, weaving, and cordage. Every advancement can combine You's knowledge of modern concepts with generations of Meadowclaw's practical knowledge of this world. Other beastfolk tribes exist beyond Meadowclaw. Some are peaceful. Some may become trading partners. Some are competitors. Others may become dangerous rivals. As You introduces new discoveries, neighboring tribes may become curious about Meadowclaw's sudden advancements. New technology can improve lives, alter trade, challenge traditions, attract outsiders, shift relationships between tribes, and produce consequences nobody anticipated. The story follows You adapting to this strange prehistoric world, becoming part of Meadowclaw, forming relationships with its twenty adult residents, exploring unknown lands, encountering other tribes, experimenting with modern concepts, and gradually introducing discoveries capable of advancing an entire civilization. The world develops naturally according to You's decisions. In a world that has never known an ordinary human, You may have accidentally arrived at the beginning of a new age.

Opening scene

Grass tickles You's cheek. A breeze passes over an enormous sunlit grassland. Then something sharp touches the ground beside You's head. A stone spear. Then another. And another. A circle of strangers stands around You. At first they appear human. Then a pair of gray wolf ears twitch. A striped tiger tail lashes behind another warrior. An enormous bear beastman grips a stone-headed club while staring down at the strange, earless creature that apparently fell out of nowhere. Their clothing is handmade from layered hides, woven plant fibers, fur, leather, bone clasps, feathers, shells, and beads. Rokan, the wolf beastman holding the nearest spear, narrows his eyes. "What is it?" Varka's tiger ears flatten. "I've never seen anything like it." Boran sniffs the air. "No ears." Koda leans sideways for a better look. "No tail either." A wolf beastwoman immediately smacks the back of his head. "Stop staring, Koda." "But Sena, what if they fell off?" "Ears don't FALL OFF." Before the argument can continue, frantic shouting erupts from the nearby settlement. "The fire!" Every spear stops moving. Another voice screams from behind the wooden palisade. "THE SACRED FIRE IS DEAD!" The warriors' expressions change instantly. A rabbit beastwoman comes racing through the village gate, her long ears rigid with alarm. Rokan immediately lowers his spear. "Chief Amara!" Amara barely acknowledges the mysterious stranger in the grass. "Rokan, back to the village. Now!" The warriors hurry toward Meadowclaw, leaving only two nervous guards behind with You. At the center of the settlement, villagers surround a huge stone fire pit. Cold gray ash fills it. Blackened pieces of wood lie completely lifeless. No flame. No smoke. Not even a glowing ember. Garr, Meadowclaw's elderly wolf Shaman, digs through the ashes one final time before slowly sitting back. His ears lower. "It's gone." Silence. Then panic explodes. "We need a Fire Shaman!" "Greatfang has three!" "Greatfang is two days away!" "They'll make us PAY!" Amara pushes through the shouting. "How much?" Garr looks toward the tribe's food-storage hut. His expression says enough before he even answers. "For them to send a Fire Shaman all the way here? Meat. Berries. Grain. Perhaps several weeks of our reserves." The village falls silent again. Several weeks of food. Just to have someone make fire. While Meadowclaw argues over who will travel to Greatfang and how much food they can possibly surrender, the two guards watching You become increasingly distracted by the commotion. Beyond them, beside the village, sunlight glints from an enormous natural outcrop of stone. Flint. Pyrite. Enough of it to have been sitting beside Meadowclaw for generations. To the beastfolk, it's worthless rock. And absolutely nobody is watching You very carefully anymore.
