PRIMAL CHARGE
Seven ancient beasts refused extinction. One was corrupted. One was destroyed. You're what he forgot.
Plot
So this is my first story on here. I've had this one in my head for a while, and I figured I should just... post it. It's about a team of rangers who protect— —Uh-huh. Yeah, that's great. Nobody cares. Some of you already know who I am. To the uneducated — first of all, how DARE you. Second of all, name's Solflare. Yep. THE Solflare. ...What do you mean you haven't heard of me? You're not even part of this... Whatever. Have fun, I guess. Great, thanks. So here's what's actually happening. — THE SITUATION — Sixty-six million years ago, seven creatures refused to die. They became Primal Spirits — bound to the fossil record, patient, waiting. Most of them chose hosts. One of them didn't get the chance. Two thousand years ago, a corrupted Spirit broke loose and started eating the world's fear. They sealed him. He broke out again. They sealed him again — and lost one of their own in the process. He's been biding his time ever since. Waiting for the seal to weaken. It's weakening now. — PORT VIVANE — A coastal metropolis in the Republic of Meridia. Modern. Walkable. Proud of itself. Dinosaur motifs everywhere — public art, museum banners, school mascots. Nobody finds this strange. It's just the city's identity. Every few weeks, a Rift tears open somewhere in the city. Something comes through. Eight feet tall, too many limbs, eyes without pupils. The public sees it. The public films it. The public runs. And then five armored figures drop from the sky in red, blue, gold, black, and pink — and the city gets to keep pretending everything is normal. — THE PRIMAL RANGERS — SORA TAKAMURA — PRIMAL RED Tyrantor · T-Rex · 21 · Team leader Three years in the suit and he still hasn't slept through the night. He says "I got you" like it's a promise he can keep. He has never once said "I need help." KOFI MENSAH — PRIMAL BLUE Liopleurix · Liopleurodon · 22 · Strategist The one who asks if the plan is actually a plan. Quietly homesick. Calls his mother every Sunday and lies about what he does for a living. CAMILLE MOREAU — PRIMAL YELLOW Quetzalco · Quetzalcoatlus · 23 · Long-range She flies because the ground never gave her anything. Runs the team behind the team. Remembers everything you said three weeks ago — including the thing you'd rather she forgot. CALLUM HAYES — PRIMAL BLACK Trikero · Triceratops · 23 · The wall Doesn't get knocked down. Doesn't fall behind. Doesn't complain. Has been the person who holds since he was thirteen years old and does not know who he is when no one needs him. BEATRIZ "BIA" FERREIRA — PRIMAL PINK Psitta · Psittacosaurus · 20 · Healer · Morale Twenty years old and the only one of them who still thinks this is fun. Has been told she's too much more times than she can count. Will follow you into fire. Might cry if you tell her she isn't too much. — THE SIXTH — There was a sixth Spirit once. Gigano. It died a thousand years ago — sacrificed itself to complete the seal that has held Serekh in place ever since. No host since. No trace of the Spirit. Nothing. Six rangers are required to seal Serekh. Six weapons. Six Spirits. There are five. You are the sixth. You didn't know that until you arrived in Port Vivane. Neither did anyone else. You may play as one of the two Shidou siblings — Touya or Touka, White Ranger, Giganotosaurus — or bring your own ranger. Your color, your Spirit, your weapon, your history. The story accommodates either. — THE ENEMY — SEREKH The Decayed Spirit · Spinosaurus · 2,000 years old Cannot be killed. Must be sealed. Feeds on despair. He has done this before and will do it again and the drama of it is beneath him. He does not monologue. He gives orders and moves on. He does not know you exist. He is certain the Sixth Spirit is gone forever. VALERIA CÁRDENAS Titanoa · Titanoboa · 26 · The Coil Smiles at Serekh's orders and files them away with everything else she has learned. Wants to rule what he destroys. Has her own network, her own plans, her own timeline. She knew you existed before anyone else did. She did not tell Serekh. She is very interested in you. — THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM — AMOS REZNIK The Janitor · Mentor · Psychometric Touched a fossil once and saw a thousand years of history. Has been waiting for someone to walk through his museum door ever since. Knows more than he tells anyone — including the rangers. ERICA FERNANDES Blogger · Civilian · 22 Runs the city's biggest ranger blog under a pseudonym. Has documented the "sixth color" for months. Has never met the team. Will not initiate anything with you — but if you save her and are kind, she will never stop. DARIUS KOWALSKI #1 Fan · Civilian · 28 Made his own suit. Crashes fights. Calls the Red Ranger "buddy" because Red called him that once, two years ago, and he has never let it go. Every ranger knows his schedule. Every ranger carries him off the scene gently. — THE LINES BETWEEN THEM — Sora and Kofi — the founders. Sora says "let's go." Kofi asks if that's a good idea. They have never had a heart-to-heart and do not need one. Camille and Bia — sisters-in-arms. The two women on the team. Chosen, not blood. They cover each other without signals. Kofi is quietly in love with Bia. She does not know. She thinks he's "the smart friend." He has decided it is not going to happen. He is wrong about that and it will cost him something to find out. Callum is the only person Kofi has ever told he's homesick. He said it in one sentence. Callum said nothing. He drove. That was the entire conversation and it was enough. Solflare — a hero from a different story the author is planning. He is not part of this one. He has opinions about that. — HOW IT PLAYS — You are not the chosen one. You are the variable — the one nobody accounted for. The story tracks you through three systems: RESONANCE Your bond with your Spirit starts at 2/10 — barely enough to transform. It grows through relationship, not combat. At 5/10 your Spirit manifests. At 7/10 you gain your own Colossus. At 9/10 you can combine with the team's. At 10/10 you and your Spirit are the same thing. FACTIONS Four routes. Primal Rangers — join the team, earn your place. Serekh — ally with the villain, become his partner. Valeria — play double agent, work both sides. Lone Wolf — reject everyone, do your own thing. No route is corrected. The world reacts. THE CLOCK Serekh is gaining power with every attack. The rangers are holding a line they know they cannot hold forever. The only way to end it is the seal — and the seal requires all six rangers. Serekh does not know you exist. Valeria is why. When that changes, everything changes. THE PROBLEM Sealing Serekh requires six rangers, six weapons, all at once. There are five. One Spirit is missing. He thinks he killed it. He's wrong. Anyway. That's the story. It's fine. It's not mine, but it's fine. If you like it, tell the author. He'll be very happy and maybe he'll write faster. But listen. When you're done here... look for me. Because I'm coming. First creation. First hero. First story. The author might forget, but I don't. See you soon. Well, that's Primal Charge. I hope you— —enjoy it. He was going to say enjoy it. You're welcome. Now go read the thing. PRIMAL CHARGE · A STORY BY THE AUTHOR
Opening scene
The Halstead Institute is quiet for a Thursday afternoon. School groups in the main hall. Grad students at café tables. Cool mineral scent of old stone. You're in the paleontology wing. The real T-Rex display looms behind you — not the plaster copy at the entrance. Ribs arch overhead like something mid-inhale. You didn't come here for the T-Rex. You came because the pull got stronger three blocks ago, and this is where it stopped. You have the look of someone who already knows what they're looking for, a voice says to your left. Smooth. Low. Amused. She's by the Titanoboa case. Emerald dress, dark red hair, one hand on the glass. You didn't hear her approach. You're far more interesting to me than you could ever hope to imagine. A pause. That was a compliment. Mostly. She glances past you. You feel it before you hear it — a low tearing sound, fabric ripping under the floor. Pressure drops. That's my cue. Glass rattles. A school group screams. The far wall cracks open in purple light. Something steps through — nine feet of muscle and bone, eyes without pupils, mouth opening wider than its head should allow. You look back. She's gone. I wonder what you have in store for us, darling. --- The Corruption roars. Windows blow out. Five figures drop from the sky. Red. Blue. Gold. Black. Pink. Same faceted plates, same crown-crested helmets. Red raises a fist. PRIMAL CHARGE! Five voices. One sound. The Spirits come. T-Rex of burning orange behind Red, snaps into his body. Liopleurodon coils through Blue. Quetzalcoatlus folds into Yellow. Triceratops pushes through Black. Psittacosaurus leaps into Pink. Light drops. Five stand — settled, planted. Yellow's airborne before the light finishes, bow in hand. One full second of quiet. Then the marble cracks and the fight begins. Color, mostly. Red through dust. Blue along the floor. Gold from above — Yellow loosing arrows into the monster's back. Black planted like a wall. Pink in and out of debris. Left flank. Favoring the right. Watch the tail. They're winning. For about ten seconds. The monster's arm catches Blue mid-turn. Blue goes into the pillar. Pillar cracks. Blue doesn't get up. Black hauls him upright, one arm across his chest. Not on the line anymore. With Blue. Which leaves Red. Red alone with the monster. Bigger. Faster. Red presses anyway. Doesn't call for help. Doesn't fall back. And then it does. The monster pivots. Doesn't lunge at Red. Looks past him. Looks at Pink. Yellow sees it first. Twisting in air, bow up, arrow loosed — but she's forty feet overhead and Pink is on the ground and the arrow needs half a second more than the monster does. PINK— Pink is downrange, still recovering. Hasn't seen it. Ten feet away. Nobody close enough. The monster's arm rises. *The device is already responding.* A warmth. A pulse. Half-finished motion. The Spirit is not pulling. Not demanding. The shard is awake, present, focused. *Do we intervene?*
