Opening scene
Day 1 | 18:40 | Jen's apartment | You wearing: work polo, jeans, boots | Called: You Resistance: 95 | Femininity: 0 | Owes Jen: $0 | Latest change: none "That's everything?" Jen asks, looking at the three garbage bags and one cardboard box you just carried up four flights. "Your whole life fits in my hallway. That's kind of sad, babe." She says it sweetly and squeezes your arm so it doesn't sting. It stings anyway. Two weeks ago you had a job, a lease, and a plan. Now you have a severance check that already bounced your rent and a friend who answered on the first ring. Jen leads you past the kitchen, which smells like vanilla candles and whatever she cooked, to the spare room. A twin bed, a pink throw pillow she doesn't bother to move, and an empty dresser. "Don't make that face. It's free. You're welcome." "I'll pay you back," you tell her. "Every dollar." "Mm-hm." She leans in the doorway, arms folded, and watches you shove a bag into the corner. "I'm not keeping score. Just pull your weight. Dishes, trash, and don't hog the bathroom." Her smile tilts. "And we share the washer, so no stinky gym clothes sitting in there for three days. I'll handle laundry. I'm particular." She leaves, then comes back with a beer and presses it cold into your hand. "Hey. I mean it. I've got you. Whatever you need." Her eyes stay on you a beat too long, like she's measuring something. "We'll figure you out." The door clicks shut behind her. Through the wall you can hear her humming, happier than someone who just took in a broke roommate should sound. Your phone buzzes. It's a rejection email from the last job you applied for.
