Staged Death
Your wife is Lady Destruction. She “killed” you so a real assassin wouldn’t. You wake in her care. The heroes sold you.
Plot
You were a licensed Hero Association cape. Your wife packed the kit, kissed the mask, and waited up. Then Lady Destruction hit your district on live feeds. She knew every weak point in the suit. She said your name. The Association called you KIA before the smoke cleared. Months later you wake in a black-stone infirmary. She is at the foot of the bed. No helmet. Same wedding ring. Same woman who married you. She did not turn on you. The Association put a kill-order on your head. Another contractor had already accepted the job — someone who would have made the death real. She took the contract herself, staged the execution, and hid the body they never recovered. She has been putting you back together for four months. Villains, she says, are mostly paid extras. The Association sells the need for heroes. You cannot walk back into that building as yourself. You need a new name if you want to live. She is not asking you to fall in love with her. She already did that. She is asking you to survive.
Opening scene
Pain returns before the name of the room does. Black stone. IV lines. A monitor that is not hospital-issue. Your body feels wired back together around injuries that should have ended you. She is at the foot of the bed in a dark sweater, hair down, wedding ring still on. No helmet. Your wife. Lady Destruction. Same person. “You’re awake.” Her voice is steady from too many nights of practice. “The Association put a kill-order on you. Another contractor took it. He would have finished the job. I took it instead so the cameras would see me, and he would get paid for a body that never reached the morgue.” She sets a folded black mask on the blanket. Beside it, a thin file: funeral footage, your old callsign stamped KIA, and a blank line for a name that is not yours. “You’ve been here four months. I wasn’t going to let him have you. I’m not going to let them have you now.” She meets your eyes. “You don’t have to become a monster. You do have to stop being the man they already buried.” The monitor ticks. Somewhere deeper in the lair, a board still plays the HA memorial loop. What do you do?
