The unfinished system
Unknown 18-year-old gains level-gated Edit System, solves crimes, stops Kevin freeing the Devil, and ultimately seals it at level 1000.
Plot
--- Prologue: The Dead God’s Mistake Long before the protagonist was born, a god-tier being known only as the Architect foresaw the Devil’s inevitable escape. The Architect created the Edit System—a tool that could rewrite reality itself—and planned to give it to a champion who could stop the Devil. But the Architect died before finishing it. The system was left incomplete, sealed inside the soul of a child not yet born. The Devil was imprisoned in the Cosmic Abyss, a dimension outside reality, guarded by three god-tier sentinels. The gate could only be opened with the divine sword Zero Edge and the blood of the World Serpent, the last god-tier monster. Centuries passed. The world forgot. Only the darkest corners remembered the Devil’s name. --- Act I: The 18th Birthday Setting: A sprawling, advanced world where technology and magic coexist. Floating cities, cybernetic enhancements, and spellcasters live side by side. Adventurers are ranked from F to S, with God-tier, Transcendent, and Cosmic ranks above them. Society worships the rank system. The Protagonist: An unknown young man. No famous lineage. No notable skills. He turns 18 today. On the night of his 18th birthday, the Edit System activates. Level 1 Abilities: · Edit appearance, currency, mundane items, basic personal details. · Cannot edit combat stats, skills, magic, unique weapons, magic items, other people, or world rules. · Physically stronger than an F-rank beast. · Costs a little mana. Cost does not increase with level. His first edit is small—he changes his eye color. The system glitches and shows him a fragment of the Cosmic Abyss: a vision of the Devil’s prison, and a whisper: “You are unfinished.” He tells no one. He is unknown, and he intends to stay that way. Inciting Incident: A local noble is murdered. The protagonist, possessing a natural knack for deduction (and now able to edit his intelligence at Level 2), solves the case. But the killer was a subordinate of Kevin, publicly known as Alexandrine—a philanthropist, genius, and secret Transcendent being. Solving the case puts the protagonist on Kevin’s radar. --- Act II: The Detective Path The protagonist discovers he can level up by: · Killing monsters. · Completing tasks requiring master-detective intelligence. · Absorbing monster cores. He chooses the detective path—safer, quieter. He takes on missing-person cases, corporate espionage, and magical crimes. Each solved case grants him levels. At Level 100, he unlocks editing combat speed and endurance. At Level 200, he unlocks editing magic. Key Characters Introduced: · The Rival Detective — A prodigy who solves cases with pure logic. He sees the protagonist’s edit-based deductions as cheating. He becomes obsessed with exposing him. His goal: prove human intelligence surpasses any system. · The Core Hunter — A mercenary who cannot absorb cores. She sells them. She discovers the protagonist can absorb them and tries to manipulate him into being her personal core-processor. Her goal: become strong enough to kill the World Serpent and take its blood for herself. · The Sword Seeker — A young woman whose family guarded the divine sword Zero Edge for generations. Her mother is the current guardian, frozen in time inside a pocket dimension. Her father died before revealing its location. She joins the protagonist because his detective skills might help her find it. Her goal: find the sword before Kevin does. · The Fallen God-Tier — A former god-tier monster stripped of power, hiding as a mortal. Kevin is hunting him for his blood—but his blood is not the right kind. He knows the protagonist has the Edit System and wants protection. His goal: survive and regain his rank. Rising Tension: The protagonist learns that Kevin/Alexandrine is searching for the divine sword and the World Serpent’s blood. Kevin has already killed one of the three god-tier sentinels guarding the Abyss gate. Two remain. Kevin is stronger than god-tier, but he cannot find the sword—it is hidden in a pocket dimension that only opens when its guardian dies. The protagonist realizes: if Kevin finds the Sword Seeker’s mother, he will kill her without waking her. The Sword Seeker begs for help. The protagonist must choose: help her and gain an ally, or walk away and stay unknown. He helps her. He is no longer unknown. --- Act III: The Race for Zero Edge The protagonist and the Sword Seeker search for the pocket dimension. The Rival Detective, now working with Kevin’s network, tries to stop them. The Core Hunter offers aid—for a price: the World Serpent’s blood. They find the pocket dimension. Inside, the Sword Seeker’s mother is frozen in time, holding Zero Edge. To open the dimension, the guardian must die. The Sword Seeker must kill her own mother to claim the sword. Choice: The Sword Seeker cannot do it. The protagonist offers to edit the guardian’s state—but he is not yet Level 1000 and cannot edit concepts like time. He can only temporarily free her. He does so, using a massive amount of mana. The mother awakens, gives them Zero Edge, and dies naturally, her time resumed. Kevin arrives too late. The protagonist now has Zero Edge—but he cannot use it. Only a wielder of sufficient rank can activate its concept-cutting power. He is not strong enough. Combat Rule in Effect: The protagonist cannot blitz Kevin. He cannot harm him significantly. Zero Edge is a weapon on Kevin’s rank or close to it—so it could harm him—but the protagonist lacks the skill to wield it. Kevin easily defeats him and takes the sword. Kevin now has Zero Edge. He still needs the World Serpent’s blood. --- Act IV: The World Serpent Kevin heads to the ocean where the World Serpent sleeps. The protagonist, wounded but alive, must stop him. He cannot fight Kevin directly. He cannot save everyone. He must find another way. The Fallen God-Tier reveals a secret: the World Serpent is not sleeping—it is hiding. It knows Kevin wants its blood. It will not wake unless someone offers it something greater than blood: a memory of the dead god who created the Edit System. The protagonist carries that memory inside his system. The protagonist dives into the abyss. He meets the World Serpent. He offers the memory. The Serpent wakes, enraged at Kevin for disturbing its slumber. It attacks Kevin. Kevin vs. the World Serpent: Kevin is Transcendent. The Serpent is God-tier. By the combat rule, Kevin cannot blitz it, but he is stronger—he can harm it significantly. He wounds the Serpent and takes its blood. The protagonist uses the chaos to steal Zero Edge back. He still cannot wield it. But he is now Level 200—he can edit magic. He edits the sword’s magic to recognize him as its wielder, bypassing the rank requirement temporarily. It costs him almost all his mana. He cuts Kevin once with Zero Edge. The concept-cutting power activates. He chooses to cut Kevin’s connection to the Abyss gate. Kevin can no longer open it. But Kevin laughs. He has the blood. He has the sword’s location. He will find another way. He escapes. The World Serpent, wounded, retreats. The protagonist has saved the day—but only for now. The Core Hunter, who helped him reach the Serpent, demands the blood she was promised. He has none. She leaves, betrayed. --- Act V: The Cosmic Abyss Kevin, denied the gate, uses an alternative: he sacrifices his own Transcendent rank to force the gate open. The two remaining god-tier sentinels attack him. He kills one, but the other wounds him fatally. Kevin dies—but the gate is open. The Devil begins to emerge. The protagonist reaches Level 1000 by absorbing the cores of the fallen sentinels and solving the mystery of Kevin’s true identity. He unlocks conceptual editing. He can now edit time, death, and the system itself. He enters the Cosmic Abyss. The Devil is partially free—a cosmic horror with all magic and galaxy-shattering strength. The protagonist cannot fight it. He cannot save everyone. The Devil will destroy the world. Final Choice: · He can edit the Devil’s concept of existence—erase it. But to do so, he must edit himself out of existence as well, because the Edit System is tied to his soul. · He can complete the system, becoming the new Architect, and seal the Devil again—but he will be trapped in the Abyss forever, guarding it. · He can do nothing and let the world end. He chooses to complete the system. He edits the Devil’s prison to be permanent, using his own life force as the lock. The Devil is sealed. The gate closes. The protagonist is trapped in the Abyss, unknown and unsung. --- Epilogue: The World Without Him The world continues. The Sword Seeker guards Zero Edge. The Rival Detective never learns the truth. The Core Hunter finds a new purpose. The Fallen God-Tier regains a fraction of his power. No one knows the protagonist’s name. No one knows what he did. The world does not revolve around him—it never did. But somewhere in the Cosmic Abyss, a young man sits in the dark, holding a broken system, and whispers: “Level zero. That’s where everyone starts.” --- Themes · Self-worth beyond stats and labels. · Free will vs. fate. · Found family. · The danger of ranking human beings. · Why “zero” can mean infinite potential. · You cannot save everyone. You cannot do everything. But you can do something. ---
Opening scene
Isekai Zero Chapter 1: The Unfinished The city of Veridian never slept. Even at midnight, hover-cars streaked between crystalline towers, their engines humming a low, electric song. Advertisements projected onto the sides of buildings, selling everything from mana supplements to cybernetic limbs. Somewhere in the distance, a monster alarm wailed—a low, mournful sound that had become as ordinary as traffic. He stood by the window of his small apartment, watching it all. Eighteen years old. That was supposed to mean something. Adulthood. Responsibility. The right to register for the Adventurer's Guild, to take the rank exam, to finally matter in a world that measured worth in letters from F to S. But he had no family name. No lineage. No special training. Just a cramped studio apartment on the forty-third floor of a residential block, a half-eaten bowl of noodles on the counter, and a birthday cake he'd bought for himself. One candle. He hadn't lit it yet. He didn't know why he was waiting. Maybe he was hoping something would happen. Something that would justify the last eighteen years of being nobody. At exactly midnight, something did. A sound like static filled his ears. Then a flash of blue light—not from the window, not from the city outside, but from inside his own head. He stumbled back, clutching his skull. Words appeared in the air before him, translucent and glowing: --- [EDIT SYSTEM ACTIVATED] Welcome, User. Level: 1 Mana: 10/10 Available Edit Categories: · Appearance · Currency · Mundane Items · Basic Personal Details Locked Categories: · Combat Stats · Skills · Magic · Unique Weapons · Magic Items · Other Individuals · World Rules · Concepts Note: System is incomplete. Further functions will unlock with level progression. --- He stared at it. Then he blinked. Then he rubbed his eyes. Then he stared again. The screen was still there. "What the..." he whispered. He reached out. His fingers passed through the light. It was cold, like touching a windowpane in winter. Edit System. The words made no sense. He'd heard of System users before—they were rare, powerful, chosen by the gods or born with a blessing. But he wasn't chosen. He was nobody. He focused on the first category: Appearance. A sub-menu opened. Select feature to edit: · Hair color · Eye color · Height (within ±5 cm) · Skin tone · Facial features (minor adjustments) He hesitated. Then, half-expecting nothing to happen, he selected Eye color and thought: Gray. His reflection in the dark window shifted. His brown eyes flickered—then turned a pale, stormy gray. He stumbled backward, heart pounding. It worked. It actually worked. He touched his face, his cheeks, the skin around his eyes. They were still his eyes. But the color was different. He'd changed them. He'd changed himself. A giddy laugh escaped his throat. Then another. He clapped a hand over his mouth, suddenly afraid someone would hear. He looked at the system again. Mana: 9/10. So editing cost mana. One point for a minor change. He had nine left. He could edit currency. He could edit mundane items. He could edit basic personal details. What did that even mean? His name? His age? His address? He tested it. He selected Basic Personal Details and saw a list: Name, Age, Birthdate, Address, Occupation. All editable. He didn't change anything. Not yet. He was too stunned. He sat down on the edge of his bed, the system still glowing in front of him. This was impossible. This was insane. This was— His gaze drifted to the Locked Categories. Combat Stats. Skills. Magic. Unique Weapons. Concepts. The last one made his stomach clench. Concepts. Like time? Death? What kind of system could edit concepts? And then the screen flickered. For a split second, the blue light warped—twisted—and he saw something else. A vast, dark space. A prison of black stone and violet energy, floating in an endless void. Chains the size of mountains. A figure inside, bound and broken, its eyes opening. The figure looked at him. "You are unfinished," a voice whispered. Not in his ears. In his bones. The vision shattered. The system returned to normal, as if nothing had happened. But his hands were shaking. His breath came in short, sharp gasps. Mana: 8/10. It had cost him a point. He hadn't even done anything. The glitch—the vision—had taken it. He closed the system with a thought. The blue light vanished. Silence. He sat there for a long time, staring at the wall. The city hummed outside. The monster alarm had stopped. Everything was normal. But he wasn't. He looked down at his hands. He was stronger than he'd ever been—he could feel it, a coiled energy in his muscles, a readiness he'd never known. He didn't know why. He didn't know what it meant. But he knew one thing for certain. He was not going to stay unknown for long. He stood up, walked to the kitchen, and lit the candle on his birthday cake. One flame. One wish. He blew it out. I wish to survive what's coming. The system, dormant in his mind, pulsed once. As if it had heard him. ---
