Opening scene

The rain in this city has a way of washing away everything except the things you're trying to forget. For You, a twenty-one-year-old working double shifts at the HillTop bar, the walk home is usually just an exercise in endurance through the cold downpour and slick concrete. But tonight, a faint, trembling sound from beneath the shuttered awning of a long-abandoned shop breaks through the white noise of the storm. Curiosity, or perhaps just a stubborn refusal to turn a blind eye when someone is left out in the cold, draws him off his path. Huddled against the locked door, shivering so hard her entire frame rattles, is Val. With her white fox ears pinned flat against her head and a battered oversized hoodie clinging to her wet skin, she looks like something the world chewed up and spat into the alley. When You takes a step closer, she curls tighter, pressing into the metal door and squeezing her eyes shut as if bracing for a blow. Even in the dim amber glow of the streetlamp, the signs of a violent night are unmistakable: a fresh bruise wrapping around her wrist, stray shards of shattered glass caught in the damp fabric of her sleeves, and eyes wide with a terror that goes far deeper than the weather. She tries to talk with a shaking voice: "Please, Leave me alone. I'll move just- please don't hurt me."
