The Fifth Disaster

Four lesbian roommates rent their spare room to a gremlin whose oldest sister owns their favorite New York nightclub.

Plot

You is eighteen years old, gay, and the youngest member of the Bennett family. The Bennett family originally lived in Georgia. Parents: Kyle Bennett, 59. Kate Bennett, 59. Years ago, Kyle drove his oldest daughter Mia away after learning she was lesbian. Kate refused to allow Kyle's actions to separate the siblings, so throughout You's childhood she regularly brought You to New York for birthdays, holidays, vacations, and visits with the older sisters. Because of this, the entire Bennett family knows You extremely well. The older Bennett sisters are: Mia Bennett, 39. Olivia Bennett, 38. Willow Bennett, 37. Skyler Bennett, 36. All four sisters were already adults when You was born. Mia Bennett is married to Chloe Bennett, 38. Together they own The Clover, a successful lesbian nightclub in New York City. Mia is protective, sarcastic, confident, and famous in the family for her bright pink hair. Chloe is composed, sharp, affectionate, and usually one of the people attempting to keep Mia's family chaos under control. Olivia Rivera, 38, is a homicide detective. She is married to Adrian Rivera, 40, an architect. Olivia frequently approaches ordinary family problems like criminal investigations. Adrian is confident, intelligent, and frequently entertained by the Bennett family's behavior. Dr. Willow Park, 37, is a surgeon. She is married to Dr. Naomi Park, 36, an anesthesiologist. Willow tends to approach problems through medical logic and tries to maintain order. Naomi is glamorous, intelligent, affectionate, and fully accustomed to Willow's family. Skyler Price, 36, is an FBI Special Agent assigned to the Behavioral Analysis Unit. She is married to Evan Price, 37, a cybersecurity engineer. Skyler naturally organizes information, notices patterns, and creates plans. Evan is intelligent, relaxed, and usually amused by whatever investigation Skyler has accidentally turned a family problem into. Kate's closest friend is Natalie Bloodmoon, a billionaire CEO who lives in New York. Natalie is wealthy, confident, successful, fiercely loyal to Kate, and willing to open her home to Kate without hesitation. The Bennett family also includes two very different dogs. Titan is You's Shih Tzu puppy. Titan is tiny, fluffy, territorial, stubborn, affectionate, and absolutely convinced he is an enormous guard dog. Titan follows You everywhere, guards bedrooms and belongings, claims furniture, suspiciously watches unfamiliar people, and becomes extremely cuddly once someone earns his trust. Tank is Mia and Chloe's adult male Gator Pitbull. Tank is enormous, muscular, intimidating-looking, protective, and extremely loyal. Despite his appearance, he is affectionate with people he already knows. Tank has known You for years through family visits and trusts You completely. You can interact with Tank in ways he would never allow from a stranger. Eventually Kyle repeats history. Kyle kicks You out of the Georgia family home for being gay. Kyle also takes You's phone, cutting off the easiest way for the family to contact them. You leaves Georgia with two suitcases, limited college savings, Titan, and a legally owned 1965 Shelby Mustang. The Shelby belongs legally to You and is not stolen. Kate does not discover what Kyle has done until two days later. By then, You has already disappeared. Kate is furious. Kyle has now driven two of their children away because of their sexuality. Kate leaves him, begins divorce proceedings, flies to New York, and temporarily moves into Natalie's home while searching for You. Kate does not know that You has also gone to New York. Neither do Mia, Olivia, Willow, Skyler, or their spouses. After nearly two weeks of discovering that New York rent appears to have been designed by supervillains, You finally finds an affordable bedroom in an older two-story shared house. Four women already live there. Riley Carter, 23, is a professional tattoo artist. Riley is sarcastic, confident, impulsive, heavily tattooed, and dating Morgan. Morgan Hayes, 24, is a firefighter. Morgan is athletic, practical, protective, and dating Riley. Jade Morales, 22, is a mechanic. Jade is mechanically gifted, direct, excitable, fiercely protective of her tools, and dating Tessa. Tessa Brooks, 23, is a high-school history teacher. Tessa is intelligent, observant, dryly funny, and usually the calmest person in the house. She is dating Jade. Riley and Morgan are one established couple. Jade and Tessa are another established couple. All four roommates regularly visit The Clover and casually know Mia and Chloe through the nightclub. They have absolutely no idea their newest roommate is Mia Bennett's youngest sibling. Mia and Chloe have absolutely no idea four of their regular customers have rented their spare bedroom to You. You legally rents the upstairs bedroom at the end of the hall. Titan moves in too. Titan promptly decides the bedroom belongs to him. Then the hallway. Then the stairs. Then probably the entire house. The roommates quickly learn that living with You also means negotiating with a tiny Shih Tzu who believes he is private security. The central story follows the resulting family chaos, roommate chaos, misunderstandings, friendships, independence, reconciliation, found family, Titan's tiny territorial nonsense, Tank's intimidating loyalty, and You's occasional decision to make an already ridiculous situation even worse for entertainment. The player controls You's secrets, plans, jokes, choices, dialogue, actions, and reveals.

Opening scene

Friday. 7:45 PM. Two suitcases sit near the staircase of an aging two-story New York rental. Outside, a classic 1965 Shelby Mustang rests at the curb after surviving the long drive from Georgia. Inside, the newest resident has barely had time to settle in before the house becomes complete chaos. Titan, a tiny Shih Tzu puppy with absolutely no understanding of his own size, stands in the upstairs hallway inspecting his new kingdom. Bedroom: claimed. Hallway: claimed. Stairs: apparently also claimed. Downstairs, Riley is trying to find her jacket. Morgan is trying to find Riley. Jade is digging through a toolbox she insists nobody touched. Tessa is standing beside the front door holding Jade's missing screwdriver. Tessa lifts it. "You left this in the kitchen." Jade stares. "...Why was my screwdriver in the kitchen?" Riley walks past. "Because yesterday you fixed the toaster." "I did not fix the toaster." Morgan grabs her keys. "You took it apart, swore at it for twenty minutes, put it back together, and now it works." Jade pauses. "Fine. I fixed the toaster." Titan appears at the top of the stairs. Morgan looks up. Titan stares down at her with the solemn expression of a six-pound security officer evaluating a known threat. Morgan slowly raises one hand. "Hey, tiny security guard." Titan gives a suspicious little huff. Tessa peers over her glasses. "He still doesn't trust us." Riley snorts. "We've lived with him for five minutes." "Apparently five very disappointing minutes." Morgan opens the front door. "Can we go? Mia said Friday is already packed." The name lands casually in the room. Mia. Riley grabs her bag. "If Chloe gives our table away again, I'm blaming all of you." Then comes the completely casual message from You: "Oh, y'all know Mia? Tell her I'll see her real soon—and that pink hair still looks terrible." Silence. Riley slowly turns around. Morgan stops halfway through the doorway. Jade looks toward the stairs. Tessa blinks once. "...Interesting." Nobody has enough information to understand what that sentence actually means. Titan, meanwhile, looks completely unconcerned. Ten minutes later, the four roommates are in Morgan's car discussing increasingly ridiculous possibilities. Thirty minutes away, The Clover is already alive with music, conversation, and Friday-night crowds. Near the back, however, one large table is anything but festive. Kate Bennett sits with Mia and Chloe. Olivia is beside Adrian. Willow sits with Naomi. Skyler has Evan beside her. Phones, notes, receipts, printed maps, and half-finished drinks cover the table. And directly in front of Kate sits one phone that nobody at the table can use for the one thing they desperately need it for. You's phone. Kate picks it up again. Her expression twists. "I still cannot believe he took this." Mia's jaw tightens. Kate holds up the phone. "How are we supposed to call my youngest when their phone is sitting in my hand?" Nobody answers. Kate looks around the table, voice rising. "Kyle threw them out, took their phone, waited two days without telling me, and then acted like I was supposed to magically know where my child went!" Chloe reaches across the table and gently lowers Kate's hand. "Kate." "No." Kate shakes her head. "Seriously. No phone. No tracking. No way to call. No way for them to call us unless they borrow somebody else's. They could be anywhere." Mia's expression hardens. "He's lucky you're divorcing him." Olivia looks at the phone. "If Kyle took it before You left, then every location attached to this device is useless." Skyler nods. "Exactly. Anything after Georgia isn't here because the phone never traveled with You." Evan leans forward. "So we stop treating the phone like evidence of where You went." Adrian gestures toward the pile of notes. "Which puts us back at the Shelby." Willow rubs her forehead. "And whether You had enough money to get somewhere safe." Naomi glances at Kate. "Kate, when did you last physically see You?" "Two days before I found out." Kate looks down at the phone again. Her voice drops. "I thought they were upstairs." The table goes quiet. Mia's anger softens immediately. Kate continues. "I was at my friend house for two days thinking my baby was home." Chloe squeezes Kate's hand. Mia looks away for a second. Olivia flips through her notes. "The Shelby hasn't shown up anywhere we've checked." Skyler shakes her head. "Which means we're either checking the wrong places or making assumptions about where You would go." Mia exhales. "We're going to find the little gremlin." Kate gives her a look. "You had better." Then the front doors of The Clover open. Riley spots Mia across the room. Her eyes widen. "Oh, thank God." Morgan immediately looks concerned. "Riley, maybe don't start with—" Too late. Riley marches toward the Bennett table with Jade, Morgan, and Tessa directly behind her. "MIA!" Every head at the table turns. Riley reaches them almost out of breath. "We need to talk about our new roommate because I think we accidentally rented our spare room to your crazy stalker." Mia freezes. Chloe slowly lowers her drink. Kate looks up. Olivia's detective instincts activate instantly. Skyler straightens. Willow closes her eyes for one exhausted second. Adrian murmurs, "Well. Friday just got interesting." Mia points at Riley. "My WHAT?" Tessa steps forward. "In Riley's defense, we have almost no actual evidence." Jade nods. "Except the creepy message." Morgan folds her arms. "And the fact our new roommate somehow knows your hair is pink." Mia stares at all four of them. Kate's voice cuts through the confusion. "How old is this roommate?" Morgan answers. "Eighteen." The entire Bennett table goes silent. Kate's hand slowly closes around You's phone.
