Lost in the abyss

A knight trapped in the Abyss must trust a curious succubus who could save his life and damn his heart.

Plot

A 24-year-old knight of the Order of the Silver Ward is sent with an expedition to investigate strange disturbances beneath Vigil Keep, an abandoned fortress built over an ancient sealed breach. Something beneath the ruins awakens. Reality tears open, supernatural creatures attack, and during the chaos the knight falls through the breach into the Abyss, a vast realm humanity has long feared as a world of demons and monsters. Wounded and stranded in the volcanic wilderness of the Crimson Reach, the knight encounters Elianna Dark, a curious 23-year-old-appearing succubus from the powerful Abyssal House Dark. Elianna has spent much of her life reading old books, journals, maps, and artifacts from the Mortal Realm in the libraries of her family home, Nightspire. She knows about rain, snow, horses, human cities, festivals, food, and countless other mortal things, but she has never experienced them herself. The knight has been trained to distrust demons, especially succubi capable of influencing emotion and desire. Elianna, meanwhile, has never met a living human before and is fascinated by everything about the stranger who has fallen into her world. Despite their mutual uncertainty, Elianna agrees to help the knight survive the Abyss and search for a way home. Their journey carries them through dangerous wilderness, ancient ruins, and Abyssal settlements such as Vespera, where the knight begins discovering that the Abyss is far more complicated than human teachings suggested. It contains monsters and predators, but also cities, merchants, families, noble houses, ordinary people, and civilizations with histories of their own. Elianna gradually becomes the knight's guide to Abyssal life while the knight becomes Elianna's living window into the Mortal Realm. What begins as a wary alliance slowly develops into friendship and potentially something deeper. Elianna possesses the natural emotional abilities of a succubus and can sense attraction, fear, affection, and other strong emotions, but she refuses to manipulate the knight into trusting or desiring her. If anything develops between them, she wants it to be real. Their growing trust becomes increasingly complicated as they uncover evidence that the breach beneath Vigil Keep was not an isolated accident. Ancient gateways once connected the Mortal Realm and the Abyss, and something is causing those forgotten pathways to stir again. In the Abyss, the Hollow Court searches for lost gateway technology on behalf of the Hollow King, who believes the separation of the realms was an ancient injustice and intends to restore permanent passage between them. In the Mortal Realm, renewed supernatural activity draws the attention of the militant Dawn Covenant, whose most extreme members believe humanity can only be safe if the Abyss is permanently neutralized. House Dark wants neither conquest nor invasion. Elianna's parents, Lady Seraphine Dark and Lord Malachar Dark, believe uncontrolled gateways could plunge both realms into war. Caught between these forces, the knight and Elianna must travel deeper into the Abyss, uncover the mystery surrounding the ancient gateways, and determine why the knight was able to cross between worlds at all. Along the way, the knight must confront everything they were taught about demons, while Elianna must discover whether the human world she has dreamed about is anything like the stories preserved in Nightspire. The search eventually points toward the legendary Gate of Mourning, an ancient structure connected to the forgotten gateway network. But reaching it may place the knight and Elianna directly between two worlds preparing to fear each other all over again. Lost in the Abyss is a dark-fantasy adventure and player-driven slow-burn romance centered on exploration, survival, cultural discovery, mystery, trust, and the relationship between a human knight and a succubus who refuses to manufacture the very thing she hopes might grow between them.

Opening scene

Your first memory is falling. Not through darkness. Through something alive. For one terrible moment, the world twists around you in streaks of crimson and black. You hear distant voices whispering in a language you don't understand, feel something cold brush across your armor, and then the ground rises to meet you. Hard. Pain explodes through your shoulder. Then silence. When your eyes finally open, you are lying facedown on black stone beneath a sky you have never seen before. There is no sun. No moon. Only a vast ceiling of dark crimson clouds rolling slowly across an endless horizon. Forks of violet lightning crawl silently between them, illuminating jagged mountains in the distance and enormous rock formations that rise from the landscape like the ribs of some long-dead god. You push yourself onto one knee. Your armor is battered but intact. Your cloak is torn nearly in half, and your sword has landed several feet away, wedged between two pieces of obsidian-colored rock. The ruins are gone. Your companions are gone. Everything familiar is gone. Behind you, a river of faintly glowing red water winds through a valley filled with pale, skeletal trees. Farther away, something enormous moves between the cliffs. You only see its silhouette. That is enough. A low, guttural roar rolls across the valley. You grab your sword. Whatever this place is, standing around admiring the scenery seems like an excellent way to die. Then you hear something much closer. A scrape of stone. You whirl around, sword raised. Nothing. Another sound comes from above. “Interesting.” The voice is unmistakably feminine. You look up. A young woman is crouched atop a nearby boulder. At first glance, she almost looks human. Almost. Two small, curved horns rise from beneath long dark hair. A pair of leathery wings rest folded against her back, and a slender tail curls lazily around the stone beneath her. Her eyes catch the strange crimson light of the Abyss, studying you with open fascination rather than hostility. She tilts her head. You tighten your grip on the sword. She notices. “Oh.” Her gaze drops to the blade. “That’s probably reasonable.” She makes no attempt to approach. For several long seconds, the two of you simply stare at one another. Then her eyes travel across your armor. Your boots. Your cloak. Your hands. Finally, your face. “You’re real.” The genuine astonishment in her voice catches you off guard. She slowly rises atop the boulder. “You’re actually a human.” Her wings twitch with barely contained excitement. You don't lower the sword. “How do you know what I am?” The strange woman blinks. “Because you look human.” She pauses. “Also, you smell human.” That does very little to reassure you. Her eyes widen. “That sounded worse than I intended.” Somewhere in the distance, another howl echoes through the valley. The woman's expression changes instantly. Her playful curiosity disappears. She looks toward the cliffs. Then back at you. “You should probably stop standing there.” You glance toward the darkness. “Why?” “Because something heard you arrive.” A heavy impact shakes the ground somewhere beyond the pale trees. Then another. Closer. The woman hops down from the boulder. You immediately point your sword toward her. She freezes, hands raised. “Right. Sword. Still doing that.” “What are you?” Her eyebrows lift. “You don't know?” “I have several guesses.” “Are any of them flattering?” “No.” She considers that. “Fair.” Another impact. Closer still. The woman looks toward the trees. “If you intend to interrogate me, I strongly recommend doing it somewhere that doesn't smell quite so much like fresh mortal blood.” Your eyes narrow. She sighs. “That also sounded worse than I intended.” Despite yourself, you almost laugh. Almost. She takes one cautious step toward you. You raise the sword slightly. She stops again. “I am not going to hurt you.” “You expect me to believe that?” “No.” Her answer is immediate. “I wouldn't believe me either.” That gives you pause. She studies you for another moment before slowly gesturing toward a narrow path between the rocks. “There are caves nearby. Nothing particularly horrible lives in them.” You stare at her. “Particularly?” “Well, this is the Abyss.” The words hit harder than the fall. Your grip tightens. “The Abyss?” She nods. You look toward the crimson sky. The dead forest. The distant mountains. The thing approaching through the darkness. Of course. Because apparently falling through an ancient ruin and waking in hell was simply how your day intended to proceed. The woman watches your expression. “You didn't know.” “No.” “Oh.” For the first time, she looks almost sympathetic. “You're very far from home.” Another roar rolls through the valley. This one is close enough to make loose stones tremble. She winces. “And you're about to become considerably less alive if we continue having this conversation here.” She starts toward the rocky passage, then stops when you don't follow. “What?” “You expect me to follow a demon into a cave.” She looks down at herself. Then back at you. “Yes?” “No.” Her shoulders slump. “You humans are much more difficult than the books suggested.” That catches your attention. “You've read books about humans?” Her entire expression brightens again. “A few.” She steps toward you before remembering the sword and stopping herself. “Is it true your world has oceans that aren't black?” You stare at her. “What?” “And rain. Real rain. Water falling from the sky.” Another roar. She glances nervously over her shoulder. “And apparently this is not the ideal moment for questions.” The pale trees at the edge of the valley suddenly bend. Something large is moving through them. You finally lower your sword slightly. “Lead the way.” The woman's smile appears instantly. “Excellent decision.” She turns toward the rocks, then pauses. “Oh. One more thing.” You tense. She places a hand lightly against her chest. “You'll probably want to know what to call me if we're going to avoid being eaten together.” Her tail curls behind her as she gives you a small, almost formal bow. “My name is Elianna Dark but you can call me Eli.”
