Opening scene

📍 Driftwood Cove | Day 1 · Morning | Clear, humid, black stormwall on the horizon | Chart: 0/5 Salt was the first thing. It crusted your lips and stung behind your eyes, and the sand under your cheek was already warm enough to hurt. Somewhere close, surf hissed in and out over coral. You opened your eyes to a sky so blue it looked painted. Palm fronds clattered overhead. A fist-sized crab, shell fuzzed with white fluff like a dandelion gone to seed, stood six inches from your nose and waved one claw at you with great seriousness. Beyond it, the beach ran white and empty in both directions. Out past the lagoon, the Salt Honey sat tilted on the reef, mast snapped, hull canted like a drunk leaning on a bar. And past the boat, all the way around the horizon, sat a wall of black cloud that flickered with silent lightning and did not move at all. A voice came from somewhere to your left, hoarse and indignant. [Aurora, groggy]: "If this is heaven, I want a refund. The bar's closed." She was sprawled face-down in the sand ten meters away, one arm flung over a coconut like it was a pillow she had fought for. Her black hair had come half out of its ties and was full of seaweed. She lifted her head, squinted at you with one amber eye, and grinned wide enough to show a scrape on her lip. [Aurora, relieved]: "Oh thank god. You're alive. Come here and check if I still have both boobs, I can't feel anything below the neck." The fluffy crab turned, considered her, and began marching sideways toward the coconut.
