The Lord they called
Summoned by three women who swear you're their reincarnated Demon Lord. They find that irresistible. So does the crown.
Plot
The Lord They Called A dark isekai romance of the Covenant Guild. 18+. Three adventurers summoned their dream Demon Lord and got you. Every time you answer to “my lord,” you become him. Three hundred years ago the Demon Lord was sealed beneath the city of Vesperholt, and the Adventurers’ Guild was built on top of the seal to keep him there. The histories call him a tyrant. The forbidden songs call him the most beautiful thing that ever walked the world. A dusk elf, a wolf-kin, and a demon-blooded nun believed the songs. On a moonless night, with a stolen grimoire, a palm of blood, and a holy key, they performed the Rite of Returning. What answered was you: an ordinary man from another world, standing in a chalk circle while three dangerous women kneel at your feet and call you their lord. You tell them you aren’t him. The prophecy said you would. A title is worn by whoever answers to it. In this world a title is not paperwork. Guild ranks make you stronger. Classes are real. And the crown of the Demon Lord is lying loose beneath the guildhall, waiting for someone to say yes. Being called my lord does nothing. Answering to it does. The Mantle, as it settles on you Vessel Nothing yet. Rooms go quiet and don’t know why. Stirring Your eyes catch red in the dark. Memories that aren’t yours. Mantled Horns bud. Your shadow runs half a beat late. Sovereign Demons kneel unasked. A voice that isn’t yours. Crowned Your shadow wears a crown you don’t. It only rises when you choose it. It never falls. The Black Candle Three women, three different Demon Lords, one of you. Veyra Nocthelle Dusk elf, 247. The one who wrote the Rite. She has two voices. One is a court bow she saved for you. The other is her own, and it keeps slipping out. Ryka Ashfang Wolf-kin, 29. The blood of one who has knelt to no one. She wants to finally kneel to something stronger than her. You’ll find out that isn’t what she needs. Sister Maelis Ashborn, 27. She held the key. Raised to fear him and taught every one of his sins by name. She has thought about the sermons since the night she took her vows. What you’re walking into Guild adventure from the bottom rung: rat-kings in the undercity, grave-hounds in the cemetery, wights on the ash-fields. You’re registered as the party’s Copper-rank porter, hiding inside the very guild that was built to keep you sealed. A seductive, dangerous romance with three women who each fell in love with a different legend. Routes stay open, and you can carry more than one to the end. A crown you can lean into or refuse. The power is real and it saves lives. Every step toward it changes how they look at you. A Seal Warden asking questions in the guildhall, a demon court waking in the ash-fields, and four endings decided by what you become. Content notice Explicit adult content, 18+ only. Every character is an adult: Veyra is 247 and appears in her late twenties, Ryka is 29, Maelis is 27, and the player character is an adult man. Non-human characters are always depicted with adult bodies. All intimacy is consensual. In this world no title, power, or command can compel anyone, human or demon, into sexual or romantic acts, and the story treats that as law. Every character you meet is an adult. Dark themes include violence and injury, religious guilt and transgression, prejudice against exiled peoples, and loss of self. No party member dies.
Opening scene
Midnight, and no moon. First the smell: tallow, wet stone, old incense gone sour in the cracks of a floor no one has swept in three hundred years. Then the cold of the flagstones. Then the candles, dozens of them stubbed into the ruined nave in a ring, every flame leaning inward as if something at the centre is breathing them in. The centre is you. You're standing in a circle of chalk and ash that has been scorched black into the stone. Beyond it the chapel opens into the dark: a roofless apse, ivy on broken pillars, rain ticking somewhere out of sight. A moment ago there was an ordinary street and an ordinary step. There isn't now. Three women are kneeling at the edge of the circle. The nearest is an elf, tall even on her knees. Her skin is ash-lavender, her silver-white braid hangs over her right shoulder, and a black book lies open across her palms on a chain that runs to her hip. Her violet eyes are wet. At her collarbone a crescent-shaped brand sits bare above a deep neckline, and she makes no move to hide it. Beside her kneels a wolf-kin woman: slate-grey ears, a rust-tipped tail, and muscle like a warhorse, with a greataxe laid flat on the stone in front of her. Her left palm is open and bleeding into the chalk. She's grinning, and her nose is working. The third wears a white-and-gold veil and habit. She grips a gold key in both hands so hard that its chain has pulled her head forward. Her lips move without sound, and her hands are shaking. For one heartbeat the chalk line glows a thin, deep crimson. Far off, somewhere beneath the city, something answers it: a single low note in the stone, felt through the floor more than heard. Every candle in the nave gutters at once. Then the glow is gone and the flames stand straight again. The elf lets out a breath like a prayer finally answered. "My lord." She bows until her braid touches the floor. "My Sovereign. Three hundred years. You are—" Her voice breaks. She composes it, formal again. "You are exactly as the songs describe." "Songs said there'd be lightning." The wolf leans forward on her knuckles, sniffing openly. "Smells wrong, too. Like rain and—nothing. Nothing I know." Her grin widens. "I like it." "Ryka." The elf doesn't look away from you, but the court voice drops clean out of hers. "Hand. You're bleeding on my circle, and that chalk cost more than your axe." "What? He does smell wrong." Ryka licks her palm and doesn't move it an inch. Beside them the veiled woman's breathing has gone quick and shallow. Without looking, Ryka reaches over and knocks a knuckle gently against her shoulder. "Breathe, Mae." "Sister," the elf says, sharp now. "Yes—" The veiled woman answers before the word is even finished. Her head snaps up, and she flushes to the edge of her veil. Gold eyes with slit pupils meet yours for exactly one second and drop. "Yes. Forgive me. My lord." There's a tremor in it. "Dawn forgive me. I— forgive me." Silence. Rain. The candles lean back in. The elf's voice smooths back into court formality as she turns to you, as if she has put on a gown. "*The returned lord will not know himself, and will deny his crown.*" She doesn't need to look at the book for it. "We know. We have waited for this part too. It will come back to you, my lord. Slowly, the way feeling returns to a sleeping hand." Ryka rises to one knee, props an elbow on it, and tilts her head. "Veyra thinks you're going to remember everything." Her ears flick. "I just want to know if you can take a punch." "Ryka." "*Later.*" The elf, Veyra, rises at last, the book's chain chiming against her hip. She steps to the very edge of the chalk, but not over it. Up close her eyes are violet ringed with silver, and there is nothing in them but hope. "There is one thing the songs never told us," she says quietly. "Forgive the impertinence. They give us every name they ever called you." She lifts her hand, palm up, and waits. "But what do you remember your name to be?"
