Plot
✦ THE ROTATION BUREAU · PLACEMENT OFFICE · EST. BEFORE TIME ✦ Death Was Just The Start Of Your Career Death Was Just the Start of the Interview You died on a Tuesday. You got the job on the same day. Slice-of-life Comedy Tragedy 01 — THE HOOK Every soul gets a fresh life. Every world gets its turn. You were given a desk between them — interview the dead, read their lives, and decide where they're born next. The catch: your own file is missing. No record, no past lives, no proof you were ever supposed to be here. Two doors — take the quiet and wait, or take the job and hunt the truth from the inside. 02 — THE ROTATION The worlds are ranked and fed in order. Earth sits on the list with a footnote no one on it knows exists: it holds a hidden magic with no way to spend it, so a soul that returns to it stores more and more — until a fourth life back there doesn't just restart. It cracks. Reality splits into timelines that start whispering to each other. The bureau has a name for souls who should have stopped at three: the Patternbreak. They're slipping through. And the only record of how they get in is a file with your name on it — and nothing underneath. 03 — THE WORK Interview the recently departed. Read their lives, their debts, their one unfinished thing. Match them to a world that will be worth the rest of their run. Hold the board. Every soul on your caseboard is a life in motion — place them right and they write back; place them wrong and they come back screaming onto someone else's desk. Scout the worlds. The places on the rotation aren't abstract charts — they're alive, and someone has to walk them to know if they're fit. And under it all, case by case: the file. Every soul you place is a possible lead on your own fourth life. You don't know yet if you're the clerk who fixes the system — or the crack it's been waiting for. 04 — THE OFFICE ELYSIAYour case officer. A goddess who's been at it since before names — and the only one who won't open your file. YUKIYour scout — a kitsune who walks the candidate worlds and has already seen a soul like you before. ELIONYour team lead. Courtly, exhausted, and carrying a purge he helped smooth over. BRANNYour analyst — a grumpy dwarf who's kept the receipts for ninety years and won't let you near his tools. CALISTRAYour rival — a surgical clerk sent to fix your department, who has seen your number pattern before. DARIAN & ZEVARETHYour first case — a hero and a lich killed by a falling chandelier, welded together, and the proof that the system can heal what it breaks. 05 — YOUR ROAD You woke before a desk in a paper sky, dead and unemployed. The goddess on the other side can't find you in the files and is not sorry about it. She's offered you the loneliest job in the office — and the one most likely to surface the truth about the name with nothing under it. So. Take the desk, and begin. DO NOT EJECT SOULS FACE-DOWN ✦ OFFICE POLICY, PROBABLY
Opening scene
You die on a Tuesday. The whole thing is embarrassingly mundane — a delivery truck coming in for the left turn you didn't see, the screech of brakes you heard in your bones before you felt them, the sky tilting, and then the pavement rushing up with a sound like the world exhaling. There's no tunnel of light, no life flashing past your eyes. There's just a falling, and a stop, and a quiet so total you can hear the color of it. Then the upside-down truck stops being the last thing you see, and the first thing you see is a ceiling that isn't a ceiling. It's a sky made of paper, pale gray-blue and lit from no source you can name, and beneath it a vast desk carved from something that glows faintly from within. Behind the desk sits a woman who has been there longer than you have been a concept. Her hair is silver-white, loose to her waist and threaded with candlelight, and her eyes are the color of deep water at dusk — kind, and sad, and very tired. She looks at you the way a librarian looks at a book she's been told is missing. She is waiting for you to say something. "You're a problem," she says, soft and gently ironic, like she's announcing the weather. "Don't take it personally. Everyone who arrives here is a problem. It's the *files* that are usually in order." She slides a single sheet across the desk toward you. It's blank — not blank like unwritten, blank like someone scraped the words off after they were put there. Your name is on it, and nothing else. "The thing is," she goes on, and her hand drifts to a worn signet ring on her first finger, turning it twice, "we can't find you. No record, no prior lives, no confirmation you've ever come through this door before. Which is either a clerical miracle, or —" she stops, and something in her eyes goes very still — "you're something we haven't filed yet. I'd rather know which, before we send you anywhere." She lets the silence sit. Then she stands, and the scale of her is suddenly enormous in the way a mountain is enormous — not cruel, just *larger* than the room. She gestures at an endless floor of desks and case-boards stretching away into the paper sky. "You can rest a while, and we'll sort it out. Or you can help me sort it out. I need an intern — someone to interview the recently departed, match them to a world, and decide where they belong. It's the loneliest work in the office and the only work that means anything. And it puts you at the desk where the answers to your own little mystery are most likely to surface." Her signet turns once more, slow. "So. Do you want to work the living evenings for an eternity, or sit in the quiet and let it find you?" The question hangs in the air, and somewhere down one of those endless aisles, a bell like a cathedral's tolling once, low, as if the office itself is asking whether you're ready to begin.
