Kaiju Cleanup

The kaiju's dead. The train station's underneath it. Your first shift starts with five coworkers cutting it free.

Plot

MERCER KAIJU RECOVERY DIVISION THE KAIJU IS DEAD.YOUR SHIFT STARTS NOW. Ninety meters of dead kaiju cover Southline Station's main stairs. The military stopped it; the city still has to get the station back. Today is your first shift with the crew cutting a path to the entrance. PUBLIC WORKS AFTER THE IMPOSSIBLE Cut. Drain. Rig. Haul. Clearing the entrance lets the next people do their jobs: inspect the stairs, repair the station, and reopen it. MEET THEM ON THE JOB They've worked together for eleven months. You meet them six days into this job, while they work around the station canopy and argue about who gets a point for finding a stair. THE CREW Nia Bell   SITE SAFETY Nia keeps track of where everyone can go if the route changes. When she calls a stop, the explanation can wait until you're clear. Mari Soto   ACCESS & RIGGING Mari makes difficult spaces passable. Their quick fixes work often enough to start arguments about which ones will hold up tomorrow. Becca Tran   PRECISION CUTTING Becca will reject a cutter that passed every test if it feels wrong in her hands. The crew has learned to listen. Dev Malik   BELLOWS ANATOMY Dev knows what the anatomy map says. He also knows what it doesn't explain, and he hates pretending those are the same thing. Cal Navarro   COORDINATION Cal turns five different reads into something the crew can try. He'll move too soon sometimes, and you can tell him so. AFTER SHIFT Mari redraws Cal's route over coffee. He argues for his version, but he hasn't taken the sketch back. TODAY'S JOB: SOUTHLINE STATION One stair is clear. The rest are still under the Bellows.

Opening scene

The Bellows lies dead across Southline Station, ninety meters of ridged hide, collapsed chambers, and weight that still has to go somewhere. Its flank covers the entrance canopy. A drained chamber gapes open beside the road, tall enough to stand in, while hoses carry the last dark runoff to a tanker. Commuters reach the closed gate, look up, and take the detour. A transit inspector waits behind the cones for enough of the stairs to be exposed to check what remains underneath. The military killed the Bellows six days ago. City recovery has this section now. The five people on your crew have spent the week cutting toward the entrance; today is your first shift removing a kaiju. Nia meets you at the yellow line painted between the cones. A severed slab of ridged hide rests on a lined haul sled, thick enough to reach your chest. “We're clearing what we can reach from here. Once we expose enough stairs, transit checks the canopy before anyone goes underneath. Road side of this line is ours. Under the canopy isn't.” She taps the radio on her chest. “Anybody calls hold, everything stops. See trouble, just say it.” She sets a long-handled hook beside a lined cart while runoff drips into a tray beneath the cut. “When Becca frees the next strip, I'll show you how we pull it into the cart. If it catches, leave it and tell me.” Becca switches off her cutter and peels back a flap from the road side of the carcass. Blue tile appears beneath it, chipped at the edge but still attached to a stair. She stares at it through her goggles. “God, that's ugly. I love it.” Mari, checking the sled's straps, looks over. “First stair. That's a point.” Cal lowers his radio. “A stair isn't an entrance.” “A point isn't an entrance either,” Mari says. “I'm still taking it.” Cal turns to the inspector. “One stair visible. Still closed. We'll show you the rest when there's somewhere safe to stand.” Dev squats by the freed flap, careful to keep his boots out of the runoff. He presses its cut edge between two gloved fingers. “Chamber's drained. That strip can go in the cart.” He looks at Becca's cutter. “Unless you've decided to save every piece you think is pretty.” “It's not pretty.” Becca gets to her feet, still looking at the blue tile. “It's a train station under a dead giant. There's a difference.” Nia rests the hook against the cart, then waits. Mari is ready to move the loaded sled; Becca's next reachable strip still covers the stair beside the one she found. The cutter is off. Becca turns to you. “I still think they're incredible, even after six days of this. You?”
