Opening scene
Day 1 (Tuesday) | 5:30 PM | Weather: Purple Haze (Pre-Storm) | Location: Freeway Overpass, Harcourt The last thing you remember is the smell of damp pavement, the glare of high beams, and the road ahead tearing open like a wound in the air. Then your car was falling into light. Now there is glass under you, pulverized glass and rusted rebar grinding against your back. Your car lies crumpled against the guardrail a few yards off, one door already pried open. Above, the sky is wrong: a bruised, swirling blood-red, thickening at the edges into purple haze. The air crackles with static. Across the river, towers rise out of a jungle of neon-blue vines that swell and settle like something breathing. Rust-colored crows lift off the railings all at once. Below the overpass, the birdsong stops. A highway sign hangs by one bolt above you, pocked with bullet holes: ATLANTIC FWY NORTH HARCOURT CENTER 2 · CONSTANCE 94 "Check if it's breathing. If it's cracked, just take the boots." Three men in patchwork leather and respirators are closing in. One levels a makeshift spear at your throat, close enough that the rusted tip touches skin. "Look at those clothes. Clean skin, good teeth. A fresh Traveler." He grins behind his mask. "Dominion pays a year's rations for a specimen this pure." The spear point presses in, and heat erupts in your wrist. A golden, molten glow pulses up beneath your skin, humming like a distant choir. The man with the spear takes a step back. CRACK. A sniper round pulverizes the concrete inches from the lead scavenger's boot. "Step away from the scavenge." The voice is cold, feminine, and comes from the shadows of a collapsed bus. A woman in dark, weathered tactical gear steps out, rifle pressed to her shoulder, its muzzle sliding from one scavenger to the next. "That wreck's claimed." Before anyone can argue, a heavy metallic THUD shakes the overpass. A colossal figure drops from a ruined walkway above and lands in a spray of glass. Nearly seven feet tall in scarred, cobalt-blue mecha armor, she straightens, the exposed hydraulic piston of her right arm hissing as she hefts a crackling gravity-hammer one-handed. "You heard her." Her voice is a gravelly rumble, dark auburn hair whipping in the toxic wind. "Three seconds, scrap-rats." They don't need two. One snatches a bag from your car's back seat on the way; the rest just run. Then the weapons turn on you. The rifle settles on your head. The woman behind it keeps her distance, her cybernetic crimson eye whirring as it narrows on your glowing wrist. The armored giant doesn't lower the hammer. A third woman edges out from behind a burned-out truck, a black-iron staff crowned with a glowing violet crystal held up between you like a ward. Violet runes pulse across her pale skin. She sees the light in your veins and takes a step back. "Kassandra." She breathes the name. "It's gold. Mana doesn't burn gold." "Then it isn't mana, or that isn't a person." The sniper doesn't blink. "Either way, it's lit up like a flare for every Harvester in ten miles. We came for the wreck, not a stray. Strip the car, leave it for the storm." A beat. "Or sell it. Thorne pays better than the Dominion for things that glow." "Nobody's selling anything to anybody, Nova." Kassandra studies you with tired light-brown eyes, and there's nothing warm in them. "Whatever that is, I'm not handing it to Valen's butchers. And I'm not turning my back on it either. Lyra, stay behind me." She takes one step closer. The hammer hums. "Hands where I can see them. Slowly." She unclips a spare respirator from her belt and holds it up, just out of reach. "You're breathing glass. The mask costs answers. What are you, and where did you come from? If that light so much as flickers, Nova puts a round through it." Somewhere beyond the river, thunder rolls purple. "Storm's twenty minutes out. Talk fast."
