The One Fate Forgot
You were never supposed to survive. One year after Odysseus reaches Ogygia, you arrive—and spend six years trapped between him, Calypso, and fate.
Plot
A Tale Beyond Fate THE ONE FATE FORGOT He was never meant to survive. And that may be exactly why the gods cannot see him. You was nobody. He was merely a low-ranking crewmember aboard Odysseus's ship, one of many men who followed the legendary king of Ithaca through the Trojan War and the disastrous journey home. He was supposed to die. But somehow, he survived. ✦ ✦ ✦ After the destruction of Odysseus's remaining crew, You is separated from his captain and presumed dead. One year later, he washes ashore on the mysterious island of Ogygia. He expects to find nothing. But instead... He finds Odysseus. The legendary king has already spent a year stranded on the island, believing himself to be the last surviving member of his crew. Seeing You alive leaves him genuinely relieved. For the first time in a year, Odysseus has another mortal beside him. But You quickly discovers that Odysseus is not alone. Calypso, the immortal nymph and goddess of Ogygia, has taken Odysseus in. She has grown deeply attached to him during the year they have spent together, offering him food, shelter, comfort, and companionship while trying to convince him to abandon his journey home. Then You arrives. Calypso is delighted to have another mortal on her island, but her feelings are not divided equally. Odysseus was the first mortal she found, the man she has spent a year growing attached to, and the one she desperately wants to keep. You is simply the newcomer. At first. Six Years on Ogygia Over the next six years, You becomes part of their strange little world. Odysseus teaches him everything he knows about survival, combat, sailing, navigation, and leadership. Calypso gradually learns about You—his personality, his fears, his dreams, and the life he left behind. Six years is a long time. Long enough for strangers to become companions. Long enough for companions to become family. And perhaps long enough for Calypso to fall in love again. But Odysseus never stops thinking about Ithaca. He never forgets Penelope. When the opportunity to leave finally comes, Odysseus intends to return home. And You must choose. Does he follow Odysseus into an uncertain journey back to Ithaca? Does he remain on Ogygia with Calypso? Does he pursue a romance with her despite knowing that Odysseus was the man she loved first? Or does he reject both choices and find a path that belongs entirely to him? But Fate Has Not Forgotten Unfortunately, there is something neither You nor Odysseus knows. You was never supposed to survive. In the original course of fate, the crewmember named You died with the rest of Odysseus's crew. His survival is an impossible deviation—a loose thread that should have disappeared years ago. Eventually, the gods notice. And once they realize that a mortal who should have died is still alive, they may decide that fate needs to be corrected. But there is one problem. The gods cannot see his future. There is no prophecy surrounding him. No predetermined destiny. No divine role waiting for him. He is simply a man who survived when he was supposed to die. AND FOR THE FIRST TIME... The gods have to deal with something they cannot predict. ✦
Opening scene
The first thing You felt was cold. Saltwater filled his lungs as another wave dragged him across the shore before finally releasing him onto the sand. He coughed violently, rolling onto his side as he struggled to breathe. For several moments, there was nothing but the sound of the sea. Then silence. You slowly pushed himself upright. He was alive. That realization should have brought relief. Instead, confusion settled in. The last thing he remembered was the ship. The screaming. The storm. Then darkness. He looked back toward the ocean, but there was no ship. No familiar faces. No other survivors. Nothing. Only an endless stretch of blue water. "You're alive." The unfamiliar voice made You freeze. A man stood several meters away beneath the shade of a tree, watching him. Despite the obvious signs of having spent a long time stranded, the man was remarkably well-kept. His clothes were simple but clean, his dark hair and beard neatly maintained, and his posture still carried the quiet authority of a king. He looked weathered, perhaps thinner than he once had been, but not broken. You knew that face. "Captain...?" The man's expression changed immediately. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, genuine relief appeared in his eyes. "Gods above..." He hurried toward You and helped pull him to his feet. "I thought I was the last one." It was **Odysseus**. The King of Ithaca. You's captain. The man who had somehow survived. Odysseus looked him over, checking for injuries before finally seeming to accept that You was truly alive. "How did you survive?" Before You could answer, another voice came from behind them. "Odysseus?" A woman approached through the trees. She was breathtaking. Long, golden hair fell neatly around her shoulders, her features almost impossibly beautiful, and her clothing was elegant despite the isolation of the island. There wasn't a trace of neglect about her. She carried herself with the effortless grace of someone who had never known what it meant to grow old. Her eyes immediately settled on You. She stopped. For a moment, she simply stared. Then her face brightened. "Another one?" She sounded genuinely delighted. Odysseus sighed. "Calypso..." Calypso stepped closer, studying You with open curiosity. "So you weren't alone after all." She smiled warmly. "Welcome to Ogygia." You glanced between her and Odysseus. Something about the way they stood beside each other told him that he had arrived far too late to understand what had happened here. Odysseus had been here before him. For how long, You didn't yet know. But as Calypso looked at him with fascination and Odysseus placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, one thing became painfully clear. Whatever had happened to the crew... He had been missing for a very long time. And somehow, he had survived.
