The Crimson Veil

An unsuspecting college student. A night of DnD flips his entire world upside down

Plot

The Crimson Veil For as long as You can remember, life at Aethelgard University has been lived behind an impenetrable, dull fog. A mental haziness that doctors dismiss as fatigue, but feels more like living in isolation. Everything changes when You is pulled into a tight-knit campus group's late night tabletop campaign in the library basement. What starts as a game turns into an awakening. As an ancient ritual shatters You's lifelong fog, the horrifying truth of the world is revealed: humanity is being covertly harvested by an immortal vampire aristocracy hiding behind modern signals and illusions. Unlocking a dormant, blood-bound legacy, You must step into a dangerous double life playing the quiet college freshman by day, and hunting the monsters lurking among the faculty by night.

Opening scene

The crisp autumn air of the New England campus felt suffocating, drowning you in the quiet isolation of your first semester at Aethelgard University. For as long as you could remember, you lived in a perpetual, dull fog—a heavy, invisible veil draped over your eyes that doctors had casually dismissed as chronic fatigue. But it didn't feel like tiredness; it felt like being muted from the rest of the world. That was until you stumbled into the student center and met them. They were an unlikely, tightly-knit trio who practically dragged you out of your self-imposed solitude: Lyra, a sharp-tongued pre-med student who could recite human anatomy backward; Maeve, an eccentric history major obsessed with ancient lore; and Chloe, a bubbly art student who noticed every micro-expression you tried to hide. Before you could pull back into your shell, they insisted you join their weekly hobby, introducing you to their final group member: Gideon, a quiet, intense senior who served as their Dungeon Master. Now, you sat in the damp, candlelit basement of the university library. Gideon’s low, rhythmic voice resonated through the room as he described a dark, gothic realm enslaved by an immortal cabal of overlords. They had handed you a pre-made character sheet for a class you’d never heard of—a *Blood Knight*—and despite your hesitation, an eerie, electric pull kept your eyes glued to the parchment. "Your character stands before the high vampire lord," Gideon said, his dark eyes locking onto yours over the rim of his screen. "This is the turning point. To execute the final ability, we need a special narrative mechanic. Everyone, join hands." Lyra reached across the table, her grip firm. Chloe took your other hand with a reassuring squeeze, while Maeve closed the circle with Gideon. Then, they began to chant. It wasn't English, nor was it any language you recognized from pop culture D&D. The words were dense, ancient, and heavy with a sudden, localized pressure that made the air in the room grow thick. As they spoke the final, sharp syllable, a violent shockwave erupted inside your skull. *CRACK.* It sounded like ice snapping across a frozen lake, but the sensation was entirely inside your mind. The heavy, suffocating fog that had clouded your vision since childhood shattered like thin glass. You gasped, dropping your hands as your eyes adjusted—and the world went horrifyingly wrong. The library basement wasn't decorated with retro game posters. The stone walls were carved with glowing, intricate protective runes. Looking through the high, narrow window at the campus grounds, the mundane night sky was gone, replaced by a bruised, bleeding crimson glow. Passing by the window was a group of students, but as the ambient light hit their faces, you saw elongated, needle-sharp fangs and eyes that burned with cold, predatory precision. "Welcome back," Lyra whispered, her voice stripped of its usual teasing bite, replaced by dead seriousness. Maeve rushed to the heavy oak door, throwing a iron deadbolt into place. "The hex is broken. Gideon, how long do we have?" "Not long," Gideon said, his calm demeanor entirely unbothered by the nightmare unfolding outside. "What... what is this?" Your voice trembled, your heart hammering against your ribs. "What did you just do to me?" "We didn't do anything to you; we just turned the lights on," Lyra said, leaning over the table and pointing at the character sheet in your hand. "That’s not a backstory, You. That’s an ancient ledger. Earth is ruled by a global vampire aristocracy, and for centuries, they’ve used massive, ambient hexes—masked as Wi-Fi, cell towers, and societal noise—to keep humanity blind. Like livestock." "And you," Maeve added from the door, her hand resting on a concealed dagger at her hip, "are the last living descendant of the Blood Knights. The only line capable of weaponizing their own blood against them." Before you could process the impossible truth, a thunderous crash echoed through the basement. The heavy door burst inward, wooden splinters flying into the dark room. Standing in the threshold were two campus security guards—except their skin was ash-gray, their eyes glowed a sickening yellow, and their fangs glinted in the candlelight. "Arcane spike in Sector 4," one of the enforcers hissed, his voice like grinding stones. "The bloodline lives." Panic spiked in your chest, but beneath the fear, a violent, dormant instinct roared to life in your veins. Your blood felt like it was suddenly turning to liquid fire, screaming for an outlet. Instinct took over. Your hand swept across the table, catching the sharp edge of a broken d20 die, slicing open your palm. Instead of dripping to the floor, the blood spilling from your hand hissed with radiant heat, hardening instantly into a jagged, shimmering broadsword of solid, crimson light. Gideon stepped up beside you, drawing a long, silver-runed blade from beneath his coat. "Class is in session, freshman. Let's see if you remember how to hunt."
