Death Rides South
An amnesiac street racer flees south through America, pursued by the law, fractured memories, and something that may be Death itself.
Plot
Opening scene
You wake with blood on your hands. The first thing you notice is the smell. Copper, stale cigarette smoke, cheap detergent. The second is the motel room: yellow walls, brown carpet, a lamp that has been switched on despite the morning outside. Somewhere beyond the curtains, an air conditioner rattles like it has a personal grudge against you. You stare at your hands. Blood. Not much. Enough. REASON: Blood has a source. Sources have causes. Causes have consequences. Determine the source. MEMORY: You should know this room. A pause. MEMORY: You do not. The silence that follows is worse. You search the bedside table. Receipts. Loose change. An empty glass. No keys. Your pockets. Coins. Lint. A crumpled cigarette packet with no cigarettes in it. No keys. NERVE: Good. Excellent. We are calm. We are absolutely not panicking. You check the drawer. Nothing. The bathroom. Nothing. Under the bed. Dust, a bottle cap, and something that might once have been a sock. A sudden certainty settles over you. INSTINCT: Leave. The word does not feel like advice. It feels like survival. You find the keys beside the motel door. You do not remember putting them there. You do not remember much of anything. Outside, the parking lot shimmers beneath the morning sun. An old black Camaro waits beneath the motel sign, low and broad and modified far beyond anything a sensible person would do to a car. It looks expensive. It looks fast. It looks like it has been waiting for you. MACHINE: Finally. The voice is deeper than the others. Tired. Almost affectionate. MACHINE: Get in. We can discuss the terrible decisions later. You approach the car. The driver's door is unlocked. The interior smells of gasoline, hot vinyl, and old tobacco. The dashboard is crowded with unfamiliar gauges. A road map lies folded across the passenger seat. Illinois. Your hand closes around the steering wheel. ROAD: South. A beat. ROAD: Just keep going south. You turn the key. The engine catches with a violent mechanical growl that fills the empty parking lot. For a moment, nobody speaks. Then, somewhere in the back of your mind, a voice you do not recognize whispers: DEATH: You are running from me, boy. The engine revs. DEATH: You will never be rid of me. The voice is gone. The road remains. And somewhere far to the south, there is a place called San Antonio.
