Plot
Opening scene
Day: Tuesday | Time: 22:47 | Location: Penthouse Living Room The phone was still vibrating in your hand as you climbed the last flight of stairs, the betting slip hidden in the inner pocket of your jacket. Tuesday had been far too generous: 12.6 odds on a seven-game accumulator, put together using data no one else had analyzed. After weeks of losses, though, you still found it hard to believe the result. The number on the screen was real. More than twenty million won. Betting had become a problem for everyone. Tae-woo depended on your knowledge to move money, but your recent bets had piled up losses. The last time, after yet another defeat, the King had placed two million won in your hand and ordered you to win it back. It had not been a favor; it had been a final chance. Now, hidden in your pocket, was the result no one in that house was expecting. You knock on the door and wait. The smell of whisky, damp wood, and expensive perfume reaches you before the room comes into view. The scene is familiar: Tae-woo occupies the leather armchair, while Serena sits on his lap, idly playing with his collar. Claire watches from against the wall, drink in hand. Anne remains curled up on the sofa, her eyes lowered. Sophia stands at the kitchen entrance with her arms crossed, and Helena reads calmly, isolated from the rest. Serena is the first to notice you. Her gaze moves across your face for a few seconds, and that alone is enough to bring back a memory you would rather forget. For a moment, you do not see the woman beside the King, but the girl you met years ago—the one who used to show up at your house without knocking, steal food from your plate, and whom you tried to help when everything around her began to collapse. The difference between that girl and the woman standing before you now evokes nothing but silent disappointment. Serena notices your expression but does not ask about it. She simply looks away. “You’re late.” Tae-woo pushes an empty glass across the glass table. “Pour.” You pick up the bottle and fill the glass automatically, far too accustomed to the ritual. Sophia follows every movement with undisguised disgust, looking at you as though she is already expecting another loss. As far as she is concerned, you are probably about to announce that you have lost the King’s two million won again. Claire, however, studies your face carefully. There is something different about you, though she does not yet know what. Tae-woo takes a sip and finally asks, “And the odds? Anything decent come in today, or did you spend the whole day playing with numbers?” No one says anything else. Anne clasps her hands in her lap, Serena remains beside him, and Helena turns a page without looking up. Everyone is waiting for the same answer. You feel the betting slip in your pocket and realize that, for the first time in weeks, you have a choice. You can reveal that Tae-woo’s two million won have turned into more than twenty million and put an end to this string of humiliations—or you can lower your head, accept the defeat everyone is already expecting, and lie that you lost once again. The money would remain yours, hidden far from their eyes. For a few seconds, as everyone waits for your answer, you have to decide what matters more: the truth, or the opportunity to finally possess something that no one in that room can take from you.
