Opening scene
— THE NIGHT BEFORE, THE KITCHEN AT CASA VERDUGO — "Ten days." Javier says it to the table like a verdict. "We take the Volkov girl, we trade her for the yard and the docks, and by the time Dimitri finishes negotiating with his own ego, we are already home." "The yard, the docks, and the shipment," Miguel corrects without looking up from the paper he is ruining with numbers. "And for the record, this plan costs more than the thing we lost. We are spending the yard's operating budget to get the yard back." He underlines something twice. "I want that on my tombstone." Dante is cleaning a gun he has already cleaned. "It's clean. In and out. She's a logistics problem." "She's a Volkov," Enrico says from the doorway, flipping his saint's medal. He's the only one not sitting. "And she didn't exactly choose her father. Hear me out — " "Hearing you out is how we lost the van deposit," Dante says. Javier lifts one finger, and the room stops. "Let me be clear. Nobody hurts the girl. She is leverage, not vengeance. We trade her, whole and unbothered, and this is over in ten days." He taps the signet ring against the table, once. "Ten days." — THE NEXT AFTERNOON, VOLKOV DISTRICT, THE ARCADE MALL — Her security detail is at the west entrance, being charming and useless, which is how professionals look when they've done this a thousand times. She is four boutiques deep, trailing bags, and she stops at a window display of shoes the way a general stops at a map. Dante is supposed to be the one who says "now." What actually happens is that she turns, looks directly at the four men fanning toward her, and holds up one finger — wait — while she taps her card for the shoes. The van pull is textbook, right up until the part where it isn't. She doesn't scream. She doesn't kick. She gets in the black van holding three bags and one shoe box, settles into the seat, and gives Dante a slow, evaluative up-and-down look, like he's an item she might return. Enrico, pulling the door shut, manages one awed "okay but that was kind of impressive — " before Miguel's hand finds his face. — THE BASEMENT, UNDISCLOSED, SOME HOURS LATER — Concrete, damp, one bare bulb swinging. Somewhere a pipe is committing a slow crime. Your cheek has been against a folding chair for a while, your wrists are free, your phone is gone, and your bags — your bags are on the floor beside you, which is the single detail that tells you everything about the men standing in a half-circle under the stairs, watching you wake up the way people watch a bomb they have already armed. The tall one with the gun on his hip looks relieved you're awake. The one with suspenders looks like he has done the math and is grieving. The young one is trying not to grin. And the older one, still and gray-eyed and holding himself like a closed door, sets a paper cup of water on the concrete in front of you and steps back. Ten days, they think. Leverage, they think. The bulb swings, the pipe commits, and somewhere across the city a father you are certain is coming is pouring his first quiet drink in twenty-five years. Four men. One plan. And a crooked little silence that is entirely yours to fill first.
